(unless it already exists and I'm too dumb to have found it)
I'm finding that my SP Empires battles are becoming VERY time consuming so I'd like to be able to do mid game saves (because it would prevent wife inflicted earache), is this possible?
@ RBS - SP Save game function is now essential....

I've just tried.
Press Escape, then save your battle :

You'll be able to load and play it later :

Will you then be able to export it to Empire ?
I don't know. I haven't tried it. But i guess so.

for single player?

Yes
You can try. If you want to preserve your current game, you can test it : create a false game in Empire, attack someone and see what happens in FoG2, then back to Empire

FoG Empires manual, section 11.3. Saving an ongoing battle, p. 139 :
"If you are fighting a battle in FoG2 you can save this as normal, load it again within FoG2 and continue until you have completed the battle. There is no need to have to resolve the battle in a single sitting."
Nice for you and the wife, isn't it ?

The Save Game function works normally for exported Empires battles. You can save using the method Athos suggested, or simply select Load/Save from the left-hand Tools menu (arrow at bottom of battle screen).
As Athos says, you can reload the saved game and when the battle is finished the import file for Empires will be written.

Thanks guys, as an insomniac I often keep the Missus busy (bored) between 4 and 8am by being mid game, this saves me a (major) headache

It's worth remembering that FOG2 also autosaves the game when you click end turn. You will find the Autosave in the list of saved games.
That is a life saver for me at the moment, as my old video card sometimes crashes the game when playing larger battles, but I can just go back to the previous turn using Autosave.
