I didn't notice this at first, because I was replaying the original campaign. But now I tried to start the onslaught campaign and procedural maps are often not loading. The loading symbol is just spinning forever and eventually a crash report is sent via internet.

Unfortunately this issue is because your graphics card doesn't meet the minimum requirements of the game (required: 2GB VRAM, you only have 1GB (1067mb) ).
This only happens in onslaught or if you play procedural skrimish maps because this is where the game uses the most memory during loading.
The only improbable solution I can offer is to try to set all graphics settings to the lowest possible value (including Resolution, leaving shadows on low because No Shadows is currently bugged) and try to start onslaught with "Land in the South" to see if there is any possibility it could work on your PC without upgrading.

Nope, the procedural scenario didn't load either. Do you know whether your 'empire' DLC will work or are there also procedural maps which might not run on my old laptop?

Yes, the next DLC will have procedural maps in them.
We are currently working on a related feature which might allow older computers to access those maps at the cost of not procedurally generating them. So depending how this pans out there might be a chance in the future but its primary function is not intended for low memory situations so you should probably reevalute once the DLC is out and we can say more.

I want to point out that Blizzard's policy to optimize their games for low end computers is one reason why starcraft, warcraft and wow became so popular.

I am nearing the end of my second Onslaught game and the procedural maps are working just fine. Glad that the next DLC will continue with them as they really increase the playability of the game. Off subject but I would really like to see a way to exchange money and resources. By the end of the game I am money rich and resource poor.
