Celts v Romans ?

Hi Guys

I now have my basic book and need to build 2 armies as my games will be mainly solo. I would prefer to use 28mm scale and if that's going to even remotely affordable I will need to have armies that have plastic troops available.

As I see it that's romans and celts/ early britons as the only choices with figures from warlord games or wargames factory

My first question is which supplement book do I need - I assume Legions Triumphant ?

Next question is - who makes the nicest plastic figures? warlord or wargames factory ?

Books: Probably Rise of Rome for the Republican era vs. Continental foes, Legions Triumphant covering the empire vs. the Celts of the British Isles.

Wargames factory make late republican romans (so far) which is Rise of Rome army list book - also includes gallic lists
Warlord Games make early imperial (principate) romans - Legions Triumphant army list - also includes ancient british & caledones lists

Havent seen wargames factory figures. Their romans are said to be a bit shallow on mould detail but paint up well. Their celts seem to have been better received by most, & they have plastic chariots (Warlords are metal)
The Warlord romans are, for plastic figures, very nice. Theyre a little shorter than some 28mm ranges, but already have a wide range of troop types in plastic, & extra less-used types in metal to the same scale. the celts are similarly nice but there are a few issues - some slightly odd poses and not enough shields in the box for 1 each. There are specific sets for ancient brits as well as generic celts

Overall, celts you could probably mix & match the 2 ranges. Romans you need to decide whether late republic or principate.

Wargames Factory have now released Celt chariots and Roman Cavalry to accompany their first releases.

I didn't see it mentioned, but Wargames Factory also has plastic Celt cavalry.

Both Warlord and Wargames Factory have more releases in the pipeline - Dacians by Warlord would nicely complement their early Imperial legionaries for instance.

Good hunting - number of Bloggers on TMP have done very detailed reviews of the figures (I think one is quoted in full on the Wagrames factory web site).

If affordability is an issue, you should have a look at 20 mm (1/72) plastic figures. There is a very wide range available.

Unfortunately....my longtime, old fart opponents and I are old. We have hundreds, thousands of 25 and 28mm minies. It's a little late to be switching to 20mm-1/72nd scale.

That said.....Warlord and Wargames Factory are cranking out a growing selection of 28mm plastic minies. WL has some metal minies too.

For now......I am buying Wargames Factory's plastic romans and Celts. If my old grey cells are working correctly....Caesar's troops fought Celts and Britons. More to the point, Romans with the pre-Imperial armour and shields fought Cs and Bs.

Buy a box of Romans from WF and then from WL.
