Flags

Post by vexiliant »

Anyone know how to "implement" these flags: capPointFlag_raf.png, capPointFlag_redusa.png, and capPointFlag_usarmy.png? into maps? I can't seem to find any topic discussing this. (highlighted in yellow)

I don't see them anywhere in here:

I see some pictures that have some of these flags, and the Boot Camp "tutorial" has them.

A while ago, the developer decided to remove certain "defunct" factions but only from the editors. Why he did so, I have forgotten or failed to grasp. It's too bad, because those extra factions come in very handy at times. To his credit, the developer did leave them in the game so that older content would not be broken. They are just not available in the editors.

There is a workaround, however, by which you may restore those factions so that they can be accessed and used in the editors. I have attached a zip file to this post that contains my notes on how to do so. Despite the cautions that I mention therein, the "defunct" factions continue to work fine as of OOB version 8.1.0.

The file that is discussed in the notes, factions.txt, can be found in:

C:\Program Files\Slitherine\Order of Battle - WWII\Order of Battle - WW2_64_Data\Content\Data
(Windows/downloaded OOB; you will have to search for a similar location if you have Mac/Steam)

Note: It's best to first save the original file someplace, then make a copy of it on your Desktop and edit it there. When finished, copy the edited file over the original in the folder shown above. This procedure is advisable because Windows does not allow editing in the Program Files directly.

Forgot to highlight Imperial Japan as one of them but oh well, it doesn't really matter since I didn't really need it. :D

The alternative Japanese faction suffers from some of the same issues as the Waffen SS, not all specialisations are available.
Same with the British RAF-faction.
They are useful though, with a bit of planning.

The devs mentioned a long time ago about the possibility to use the same faction twice. The idea was to add more flags that could be used for the duplicate faction. This is really essential for telling them apart in the editor. The new graphics should be easy to add, but nothing has been done fixing this.

Hmm, they've most likely got rid of the idea, since as you mentioned them mentioning the idea a long time ago. What would be the purpose of the defunct factions used in fully functional scenarios? What i'm doing is just a red vs blue "possible campaign" and just adding on for the military bases and airfields (RAF). They were mainly just cosmetic purposes for me as its visually appealing to have a correct flag in the scenario, it would be confusing and wrong to have like, for example: Germany vs France but have Russian and Japanese flags in the scenario itself.

The idea was to create new flags for the alternative factions, ie different variations of the Germans.
Alternative factions are very useful whenever you need the AI to control some German units while the player handles the rest.
Designers often use the Kriegsmarine faction for this. It would be nice to have more varied options.
There are lots of examples in official campaigns. The latest Soviet campaigns use this and the AI-controlled factions do not have a nice, alternate flag, just an orange blob.

For me it seems quite obvious, that the red and blue factions were prepared for the promised skirmish mode. There is even the line "skirmish = free" in the factions.txt at the [REDUSA] section.

Necroposting, but just realized like 2 days ago that that image of the RAF Flag being used is from the Battle of Britain Mod.

SIlly me!

So in reality, we've just solved it for the Original Game. :D
