Troy - just like the film ?

Post by RobF »

Hi guys

I am new to FoG and to the ancient period and know next to nothing.

I watched the film Troy again the other day and while I assume it's basically a work of fiction/myth ? I still find it an exciting idea to game and model.

So my (first) question is ...

Are there suitable armies to be led by Achilles and Hector in one of the supplements ? if so which one do I need?

Also - I have taken a fancy to the 15mm range by Xyston after being pointed to them by a member here (thanks) - do you know which of their armies/figures would be suitable for what I want ?

TIA

Thanks very much for the very quick reply

Would you happen to know what models are suitable for these armies ?

Xyston are not suitable because they make hoplites from classical age onward, so you can use their miniatures for greek army from 6-700 BC onward. Homer's heroes are 3-400 years older.

Essex have a range of Mycenean.

Magister Militum, just the ones I like the most. They look even better when you see them in your hands.

I´m painting my Myceneans this month, I have a mix of miniatures from diferents supliers. I must to say that the better ones are from Chariot.

I have bought some chariots and Nestor spearmen from essex, all the foot lancers from musseum, and more chariots, LF and the Myrmidons from Chariot

It´s very easy army to paint and looks amazing, I will show us when it finished, and probably I will sell on ebay, my apartament is no sufficiently large to store 6 FOG armies and 2 army corps of Napoleonic Austrians :?

Caliban66 you are right, Chariot is best choice.

So the historic Trojans and Myceneans would have looked much different from way they were depicted in the movie. They probably fought near nude and used pretty light equipment - some would have used some really weird looking segmented bronze armor that resemble upside down collapsable drinking cups. they wore helmets that would resemble a skull cap with boar tusk sewn on it.

Point is, is you fancy the Xyston mini's and want to model paint minis that are hoplites then I would recommend you get the Immortal Fire book, use classical Greeks and paint them they way you want - play with them they way you want, which is probably a little closer to the movie, too. Not that I am saying anything about the armies in the movie is historic for any period.... But it was a good flick :)
