Interception charges

Post by Polkovnik »

What happens when a BG making an interception charges contacts other enemy troops (i.e. a foot BG making an interception charge moves 2" forward and in doing so contacts an enemy BG that it not charging) ?

Also, can the intercepting BG step forward ? I would think not, but wanted to check.

Interceptions can only contacting charging enemy and may not deviate in any way to do so. Therefore in this case they could not intercept

Unless they can intercept by moving less than 2" and not contacting the other BG.

Does this mean, for example, that they (the interceptors) could perhaps move forwards 1.5", stop short of the non-charging BG, and the charges would then move into contact with them (the interceptors)?

Yes, interceptors do not have to move their full distance. They just have to get in the way. So if they can get in the way without touching the non-charging BG they can intercept. The do not step forwards as they stop at the line where they wish to get in the way and then the chargers complete their charge. The original chargers can then step forwards.

Also interception charges cannot contact the front of any enemy BG. The only situation where an interception charge can contact enemy is when it hits the flank of the charging BG as a legal flank charge. In this situation it may well happen that the intercepting BG steps forwards into another enemy BG but that is a rather unusual situation and not one I have ever seen.

However the interception into the flank "is treated as a normal flank/rear charge" for stepping forward etc., not affecting the interception rules.

Hammy
I checked the rules didn't see any restrictions on an interception can't contact the front of a charging battle group. the diagrams on page 63 for example show cav hitting the charging Romans on their front, even if it is on a slight angle.....
Only says you can't be the target of a charge, so if your ZoI is longer than the charging units charge move you could intercept them frontally if you were beside and slightly farther behind than the charged unit I would guess?

No, it shows the charging Romans hitting the intercepting cavalry.

By the text on P63 an interception charge must either:

Cross the path of the charging BG

or

Contact the flank or rear of the enemy BG

Cross the path does not allow contact, it just puts the interceptors in a possition where they must be contacted by the chargers.
