Chaining "Needed" Trade Goods

Post by Kriegsspieler »

Ok, can someone please help me understand a topic that is still murky to me -- namely, whether "needed" trade goods can be chained to extend their availability.

Take papyrus as an example. In my current game, I somehow managed to pull papyrus to Apulia in Italy (in the heel of the "boot") by building a Praeceptor House. This is kind of unusual, in my experience; it's not often that I've managed to get papyrus so directly to the Italian peninsula, at least not without the help of trade range-extending decisions. In any case, it happened and now papyrus is listed as one of Apulias imported trade goods. So the question now is, should the papyrus in Apulia then become a source for "needing" papyrus into regions further north in Italy? I'm not talking about adjacent regions, but instead about regions that might acquire papyrus bi the same way as Apulia originally did, via the trade range.

In fact I tried building a Praeceptor's House in Etruria, 4 regions away, expecting that it would pull Apulia's papyrus into the region. But to my surprise, when starting the build I was told that there was no papyrus in trading range. So what gives? Does "needing" a trade good into a region NOT establish it as a new source for further broadcast? Or might this be a bug?

I crave Enlightenment. But given that this is the ancient world we're speaking of here, I'll settle for a decent explanation!

no is the answer.

There is a one off transaction, the good is needed in a region, its either available in the trade range (& I'll include local production) or not. Available is that it is produced (building or natural resource) in the region. If not you default to the 3* cost. So merely importing it to one region does not set up a secondary trade chain.

I'd guess your Apulia instance was a result of someone building the canals structure (which then produces Papyrus).

Now, bonus goods do have a limited chain, bring it in to one region (anyway you can) and all the adjacent regions can then access it.

Thanks for the answer about chains of "needed" goods. I don't think someone built a canal, because it was pretty early in the game for that, but whatever!

What I quoted here, however, is not quite accurate, or at least it's potentially misleading. When a structure receives a bonus for a trade good from a neighboring region, that trade good isn't actually brought into the region, so it can't be passed along to another region. That is clear from both the manual and how the game actually plays.

I know you know this -- I just didn't want anyone reading this thread to become confused.
