foot men at arms in 4s or 6s

Post by BlackPrince »

I have played several games using my foot men at arms, armoured, sup, drilled, hvy W in BG size of four stands. I know the consensus is to use them in fours but I am beginning to rethink this mainly due to the low number of dice they roll there is a huge variation in the melee out come.
The advantages of fours are manoeuverability and an extra BG or two in your army increasing break points. Disadvantage only rolling four dice melee which means you cause about 2.25 hits per turn. Generally not enough the remove an enemy base and can easily out rolled by a six base BG. Do players think it is worth the disadvantages to move up 6 base BGs to improve their hitting power?

Take 2 BG's of 4 and having sit side by side. :) You get 2 BG's and you also have the same hitting power as a 6 or 8 BG.
Po-tae-toes! Mash 'em up and put 'em in a stew!

Ganging up two 4s on an enemy BG, maybe even one of them on a flank, is nice. Disrupted or disordered, 4 loses 1 die and 6 loses 2 dice, which is also a consideration. Overlaps are only an issue if they fight alone.

4s are handy if not too brittle, and Superior 4s can lose a base or two and keep fighting, which is the attraction. So there are lots of reasons behind 4s.

You might consider taking a mix. Note that if you have a 6 and a 4 side by side in line they can easily both be rear supported by a 4 in 2x2 formation behind the join if together and also have several options for dividing up.

i do this with my argyraspids. works pretty well.

the opponent always having to split dice is very useful.
