Quarter to Three reviews Field of Glory: Empires, and he loves it!

Did I mention the unique gameplay touches designed into some of the nations? The excellent interface that makes it easy to jump to whatever information I need, whether it’s the size of the Carthaginian navy, the closest source of amber, if there’s a river crossing on the way to the next province, or how good that unit is at besieging fortifications? The scattered tidbits of historical flavor text, especially on each of the buildings? The post-release support, which includes a new diplomacy system currently available in a beta build? And did I mention that I haven’t played a strategy game this unique and absorbing since Victoria and Imperialism before it?

The article goes in detail in analyzing many of the most interesting mechanics and challenges Field of Glory: Empires has to offer. This piece could be very helpful if you are interested in purchasing the game but you are still on the fence!

A great and detailed review!

The reviewer has dug into the guts of these models: CIV, EU, and Empires. Tom Chick seems to go as far back as Sid Meier and the first CIV.

I have to admit I only dabbled, but that is because AACW got like 17 patches. Pocus will achieve perfection because of his nature, not because Slitherine can milk the customer base with 100 separate DLCs.

My impression is that Empires and FOG2 are great games, but both play best stand alone as neither was really designed to optimize the user experience jumping to the other. If you really want 2 level play, you are probably better off with the RTW2 + DEI(mod).

One other thing not mentioned, but worth mentioning (I am still playing Alea Acta Est), despite Empires being much more and newer, it runs way faster than a 10+ year older AGEOD titles. It also does its magic at about 2-3X the speed of RTW2 + DEI (mod) turns.

Lastly, most notable is that one can really play tall instead of just wide. EU4 does lip service to it, but if you ever lose site of mil tech and your borders, you will be the tallest extinct nation in the game.

Well done, Pocus, Phil, and Slitherine!
