Proposed Rules Mod - SpellCaster MOD 1

Post by SirGarnet »

SPELLCASTER MOD 1: This is a general mod which can be used as a framework for use of one or more Spell Mods or Magic Effect Mods with a SpellCaster as provided for in an Army List and agreed upon for use among players for a scenario or other game.

About SpellCasters: SpellCasters are represented by a normal or small size base that is treated as a Commander for all movement purposes, including routing with a broken BG and Joint Action movement. The sole effect of a SpellCaster is to spellcast Spells as defined by the applicable Spell Mod and/or exert Magic Effects as defined by the applicable Magic Effect Mod. SpellCasters are deployed along with Commanders and may be removed from the game when not accompanying a BG in the same manner as Commanders, or as provided in the Magic Mod.

SpellCast Rank and Radius: A SpellCaster may be ranked as Trained (TS), Famed (FS), or Legendary (LS), each having the same respective Radius as a TC, FC, or IC. Unless specified otherwise in a Spell Mod in use, a Spell may only be cast upon a target (a base, BG, terrain feature, etc.) which is at least partly within the SpellCast Radius, and the coverage of a Magic Effect is the SpellCast Radius unless the Effect Mod specifies otherwise. Any Mana Points or other attributes used in the applicable Spell Mod or Effect Mod may be linked to or independent of this rank or radius as provided in such a Mod.

SpellCaster Commanders: An Army List may provide for a Commander to also be a SpellCaster. He conducts SpellCasting normally, except that if in front-rank combat a SpellCaster Commander may only SpellCast within the area physically covered by the BG he is with or any enemy BG in edge contact close combat. Unless the Effect Mod provides otherwise, presence in front-rank combat does not alter a Magic Effect. The rationale for this is that casting is active and effects tend to be passive once created.

SpellCaster Army Points Cost: To be defined by the Army List Designer.

Design Notes:

 This is a structural Mod that can provide a pre-made framework and FoG rules context for use of various mods involving casting of specific targeted spells at specific points in the sequence of play (Spell Mods) or Magic Effect Mods involving the creation or existence of Magical Effects that apply over time (maybe permanent, maybe temporary or consumed) to a specific character, base, BG, or terrain feature, or, as the default option in this Mod, to any of the above subjects who are eligible if they are within the SpellCast Radius of a the SpellCaster source. Magic Effects do not require a SpellCaster Mod since they can instead simply be linked to a source such as a BG or an enchanted item borne by a character or base.

 SpellCast Radius was matched to Command Radius purely as a convenient starting point.

 This Mod should be helpful in indicating some of the common sense issues that need to be addressed in development of other Mods for characters or magic.
