Newbie question

I'm new to FOG and not sure of a couple of things. What does FF refer to when reading about other peoples army lists? And would a 6-base Roman Legion be in two ranks of three bases or one rank of six bases. Sorry for being such a *!!*wit!

FF=Field Fortifications

The 6 bases would normally be in 2 ranks for maximum concentration of fighting power since the second rank counts along with the first rank in the melee combat phase, but there are situations where the threat from the opposition is quite weak and one rank is used to maximize frontage covered. Skirmishers are weak in close combat, for example, although if you widen the frontage it becomes easier for larger numbers of skirmishers to shoot at you, increasing the risk of negative results from their shooting.
