Tip: Over the hills..

Post by PoorOldSpike »

Hill LOS is still largely a mystery to me (i'll run some LOS tests later) but I've just played a Skirmish battle and at least learnt something..
That AI T-34 on the rear slope of the hill on the left was firing at my Pak40 ATG on the right, and when my turn came up I tried to fire back from the Pak's viewpoint but the aiming crosshairs wouldn't lock onto the T-34 even though as I said the T-34 was able to fire at the gun!
Problem solved:- I had to rotate the viewpoint as below so that I got a clear view of the T-34 behind the hill and was then able to lock him up and fire..:)

Kinda makes sense. The game probably thought you were clicking on the tile, not the tank

Not exactly a wedding cake effect. How is it not blocked?

If your unit is able to fire over a hill, It has it head or gun peaking over the hill. Therefore you can hit it.

I've run LOS tests but hills are still a bit of a mystery to me, I've learnt not to trust hills because whenever you think you're safely behind them out of the enemy's sight, he'll somehow sneak a shot and hit you!

Here are a couple of screenshots showing a tanks LOS from behind and on a hill using Paul59's very useful "Purple In range" mod, the tank could see and shoot at anything in any purple tile.(And of course it could be seen and shot at by an enemy in any purple tile)
