I disagree, the yellow bases marked as red don't count as over lap and do not contribute any dice to the combat. The yellow bases with the blue dots contribute dice to the combat, either as in contact or as an overlap, they just add their dice.
I am assuming the green unit is friendly to the yellow unit which is why the red dots don't add any combat dice.

Perhaps you could read better my post. I said this would happen without the rules (2nd bullet of Overlap paragraph p 86), and in fact I wrote this as another example where the rules apply.

In the situation I depicted with my diagram (case 2) you have a great concentration in one single spot. If you look to the corner where red faces in two directions, you can see there are 6 bases against 2 (and they can be up to 8 because yellow could be a overlap on its left side I didn't depicted). Looking to this diagram, IMHO the 2 yellow bases with blue dot shouldn't get dice, because in a real situation there wasn't enough space. More, if you compare case 2 with 1, there is a big sproportion (again, this is just my opinion) because in the rare cases base doesn't turn to face, yellow bases marked with blue dot cannot get dice. I mean: the space is near the same, but in case 1 fight 4 bases and in case 2 fight 6 bases. So I can say my doubt, to try to explain still better, it's not on absolute ratio between combatants, because as you point out there are cases where this can happen in a totally different way.
Good point on the 16 bases.

Either way if the victim BG can actually survive that long it is doing well ;)

I honestly can't think of a situation even remotely approaching the one you are worried about happening in a game.

Yes, indeed this is not an issue that involves drastic changes of the game. Anyway, this happens yesterday in a game. A BG charged in flank while it was fighting on its front won the melee; the BG at its front was already FRAG when flank charge happens.
