Karvon (Lombards 776 AD) defeated Rob123 (Arab North Africa 1000 AD) 60-43 for a 4-0 victory.

We deployed our massed lancers in the center between a pair of small hamlets with a horse archer on each wing. Our light foot we deployed along the edges of the woods securing our right. A few lousy spearmen lurked behind the woods. The Arabs deployed assorted infantry on their right in the shadows of a rather massive rough hill. They had some mixed units of horse on their left.

Initially, most of the Arab infantry moved to secure the hill on their right while their horse moved up to the stream banks to contest a potential crossing. We pushed our light foot out of the woods and into the rough and marshes in the center along the stream. Our bow fire drove off the Arab light horse and dispatched some of their horse which ventured too close. We followed up with our lancers, driving the opposing light horse and horse archers before us and tangling with some of the armored archers who chose to stand and fight. We shifted our lancer line right to pass over the stream to the right of the marsh and rough dominating the center. Our lancers dispatched most of the opposing horse after a bit of a fight and then dealt with the Arab foot which belated came up to try to save the collapsing left. We managed to kill enough of them break the Arabs spirits and the day was ours.

Challange1 (Roman 199BC) defeated General Shapur ( Greek 460BC) 48-20

An almost featureless plain saw the 2 battle lines clash head on with very little manouevre. The Roman's slight superiority won through though not without losing several cohorts and some nervous moments.

Man for man the Romans had the advantage in this one and I managed to not throw that away.

Well fought General. Thanks for the game.

General Shapur (Byzantine) defeats Karvon (Lombard) 47:42

A blood bath over a difficult bit of geography.

A steep rocky hill dominates the field. This is the obvious focus of the battle to come.

Lombard Raw troops are tasked with holding the hill whilst their elite cavalry seek to flank any Byantine attack held up on the slopes. The Byzantines have a choice, set up on the flat and wait for an attack, or contest the hill.

Karvon is a wily general, and with obvious cavalry choices I know he will be dangerous if I stay static, so the Byzantines load up with elite spearmen to take the hill whilst Byzantine mediocre cavalry attempt to stall the Lombard flankers in an obvious cavalry route behind the hill.

Neither side has the best infantry for rough ground, be are both mainly heavy foot - so will fight disordered. The lombards have bigger units but the byzantines are more skilled. On the hill its a stalemate until a mob of Lombard townsfolk rabble are butcherd on the steep slopes by byzantine light infantry - this causes a cascade of disruption opening the way for the elite spearmen to take the hill.

On the cavalry front, the Lombards try to get around the Byzantine cavalry rather than attack them head on, seeing a chance for the cavalry to escape, the byzantines retreat to the hill slopes hoping to counter the Lombard superiority with height advantage - its a failure as massed archers blended into the lombard cavalry fragment Byzantine cavalry making holding anywhere impossible.

As night falls, some Lombard units rally and a Byzantine unit breaks after repeated cavalry charges - its inconclusive with the Byzantines holding the field.

Thanks for another great battle Karvon

General Shapur (Mountain Indian) defeats Cunningcairn (Egyptian) 41:9

Tough start line. The mountain indians set up in, well, mountains and rocky hills to stand against Egyptians crossing largely clear terrain. Good battle, but terrain won it for me in the end I think.

NikiforosFokas' Romans won GeneralShapur's Numidians, 43-17%.
An unfair match for the Numidians, but Shapur is a very capable opponent so it was not as easy as the score maybe shows.
Thanks for the game.

Challenge1 (Kappadokian) defeated Rob123's (Indian) 42-11

To be fair to my opponent, I mostly just placed the Irregular foot (80% of the army) on the base line and sat there waiting for the inevitable onslaught of elephants and bows, not really giving this army much of a chance against the Indians. I completly overestimated the Indians combat ability and that combined with some awful Indian cohesion tests, lead to the victory.

Thanks for the game Rob.

Didn't realize this was going on. If there ends up being a Chaos Tourney III I would be interested.

The notice was up for a couple of weeks before we started, sorry you missed it. Next time I'll post it to past participants via pm as well.

I plan on running this event between each digital league season, provided I get a minimum of five people willing to play.

The terrain of note for us was a large forest masking the Bulgar left. We lined up our spearmen, supported by a few Italian medium foot, to sweep across the field with those woods to hopefully secure our right flank. We had a few light foot initially hidden in small woods on each wing. Our hand full of horse we held in reserve. The Bulgars deployed a long line of horse archers to oppose our line backed by a few lancers and more horse archers in reserve on each wing. Our plan was to aggressively engage and pursue the enemy horse all along our front, either driving them off the field or trapping and killing them.

The Bulgars immediately attempted to push out past the woods on their left in order to encircle us. They likewise began a flanking move on their right as well. We shifted our whole line to the right to prevent this and refused our left to delay the flanking attempt there. As the Bulgar horse archers closed in the center to pelt us with arrows, we immediately charged all along the front, sending their horse scurrying. We sprung our lights from the woods on both flanks and shot up some of the Bulgar lancers. We sealed off our right and steadily drove the Bulgars back in a series of charges. Bulgar shooting did disrupt a few foot in a couple of places in the line, but our constant charges kept the horse archers from being able to effectively concentrate their fire and slowly pushed them off the field. Bulgar lancers attempted to rundown a couple of units, but were beaten off or flanked and broken after a hard fight. Our own horse we threw in to support in the center and right and contributed to helping kill and see off a number of the enemy horse. Keeping up a steady advance and pressure with our foot, we eventually killed or drove off enough of the Bulgar horse to break them, though we lost a few of our own in the process.
