Version 4.0 Can't take Omsk
Currently playing 4.0 version. Been hammering away at Omsk for the entire Spring/Summer/Fall 44 with everything I have. It contains a Guards Mechanized Unit with leader. Experience 100. Morale hovers between 30-60 but I can never get it down below a 6 during any month's battle. The river line in front of Omsk ensures that only one unit will attack without penalty from the river. I have taken every major city and territory except for Sevastopol. USSR only has a few units left. I have taken Britain. Only US and Canada remain and are staving off waves of troop transports with relative ease. I think maybe this system is broken? Taking this city should certainly not be this impossible under the circumstances. It is now Winter 44 and I've been getting my clock cleaned during every attack.

What is the supply level of Omsk? Is it down to red name yet? That can be achieved by strategic bombing.
You should be able to make 2 tactical bomber raids on the city per turn. If you're using your best experience damage units then you should be able to get about 2 hits per bomber. You can attack Omsk from 4 sides. 3 across river. Which units are you using against Omsk? You should be using experienced mech or infantry units. SS units work well for this.
The number of steps the defender can repair per turn is limited. So you will eventually win this fight with war of attrition. it's the same way you take Leningrad and Sevastopol. It's slow, but you will win in the end. However, if you attack during non clear weather then you can expect a stale-mate where the defender can repair damage every turn. However, every time the defender is attacked and have to repair it will lose morale. Eventually it will collapse.
If you're playing a human opponent then they can use a trick which means they attack with a very depleted defender to get it killed and then place a fresh unit in the empty hex.
However, Omsk is not one of the victory cities so if you have to screen the city then you get the same victory level.
Omsk is made very difficult to capture on purpose because it simulates the last Russian defense. In the real war the Germans would have had to push a lot further east to cause a Russian surrender. Maybe all the way to Vladivostok.

If you did not upgrade your attacking troops or you have not enough elite troops to launch the attack & the Soviet mech with top tech lvl ,you will never conquer Omsk but make the defender full experience .

Re: Version 4.0 Can't take Omsk
Thanks for all responses. I get exactly what you are saying regarding the attrition and it has worked for me the entire game.... I am using Panzer and Mech level 21/22 and 18. Three of my Panzer units are SS. The soviet guards mech unit is upgrade level 13. I started the effort to capture Omsk during the first clear turn of 44. I had no trouble eliminating the pocket of units around the city but the city itself is the worst cauldron of death I have ever experienced in this game system as the attacker. I have launched attacks by 4 units for I think around a dozen turns and I am suffering 2-3 as many casualties as the defender for each turn including air assets. I have a ready reserve of powerful attackers behind the first wave to replace the shattered attacking units from the turn before. Attacking during snow turns is essentially suicide. Tac Air is did not work as well as I had hoped, only causing 1-2 points of damage each turn. As I said, I have been unable to reduce the unit below 6 and it goes back to 10 each turn with 100 percent experience not getting any lower. The experience level of a few of my attacking forces is 80-95+ but some are down below 60 or 70 percent because at this stage in the war, I am probably replacing my losses with conscripts. I am going to try this campaign again and see what kind of results I get. Perhaps I should have upgraded my panzer and mech and organization better and earlier and paid less attention to navy.Peter Stauffenberg wrote: ↑Thu Jan 02, 2020 4:18 pm What is the supply level of Omsk? I checked version 3.1 and there is not any river in front of the city. I suspect that is a big reason this city is so difficult to take in the 4.0 version
Re: Version 4.0 Can't take Omsk
yes , the map was changed in 4.0. Actually you should also put generals who has attack bonus point with the attackong elite units( SS) . In 1944 , Mechs usually performs better than Tank when they are used to attack a fortress city like Omsk .

Re: Version 4.0 Can't take Omsk
Thanks all.
I was able to take the city during my last 2 games. It's harder for sure in this latest version, but not impossible or a fatal flaw as I was initially starting to believe. Yes using Generals with attack bonus and SS does help. Things like advanced research and quality superiority over the enemy also.... I will have to try one or two SS mech next time as I have been using all Panzer Corps and SS Panzer Corps.
