Declaring war on a nation that your ally is at war with
I am playing as Rome. I allied with Syracuse, who is at war with Carthage. Carthage then declared war on me. I landed troops in Syracuse, Carthage invaded, and my troops were forced to go back on the transports. I reloaded, declared war on Carthage, and fought a battle next turn. So what's up with that?

So if I get it right, you were allied to a country who lost a region against his enemy, and you were in that region. The region being now neutral to you (as Carthage was neutral) you got 'displaced'. Seems right to me.

It doesn't seem right to me. I thought I was there in time to intervene. I was not only the ally of Syracuse, Carthage had declared war on me. There should have been a battle. But for some reason the game showed I was not at war with Carthage. Who had declared war on me. When I reloaded and declared war on Carthage, there was a battle. And becoming allies with a country means you are at war with whom they are at war, correct?

Not correct. You *might* get dragged to a war of your ally, but not necessarily, if you ally after they already are at war.
At times this might get complicated, so you really have to follow what happens. For example, lets say you are allied with country A, and you are at war with country X who are allied with country Y with whome you are not at war (because X declared war on you, and X and Y didn't have Full Alliance). Then, if your ally A declares war on X, Y will join X to fight against A, but there still will be no war between you and Y.
In short, always check with who you are at war and with who not. The resolution of alliances and declarations of war are quite logical, but they can get confusing when there are allies, enemies, allies of enemies, and allies of allies at war with some of the allies of enemies. It is quite possible you are at war with some of them, and then your armies gets bounced off because your armies are deemed to be in neutral territory.
