Div A

Geffalrus (Antigonids) and Triarii (Hannibal in Italy) agree to an honorable draw of 27-36.

Seeing the open land with few hills and little rough terrain ahead of them, the Antigonids experimented with an aggressive approach of mass pikes, max light cav, no foot skirmishers, and thureos and cavalry in support. Worried that the cheeky Hannibal would escape across the river running up one side of the map and force a 0-0 draw, the Antigonid cavalry rushed forward to try and seize the ford. Completely unnecessary as it turned out. The Carthaginian cavalry were all massed on the opposite side of the field from the ford with skirmishers in tow, while the infantry were all hidden behind a far hill and in some woods (some elephants attempted to hide in a small villa, but were actually visible from turn 1). The Antigonids changed plans and vowed to chase down the cavalry and deal with the hidden infantry later. The Antigonid left flank phalanx and cavalry pursued the elusive cavalry, while the right flank phalanx wheeled about to join them.

Then - TRAGEDY. Some wily Numidians snuck around behind the lines and charged a phalanx in the rear. And didn't bounce off. Oh the indignity. Even worse, this happened in range of some advancing Samnite infantry. The rest of the pikes turned around to try and support the exposed phalanx, but it was no use. Unable to kill the Numidians........like at all......the pike unit was flank charged by multiple impact foot units, quickly routing it from the field and disrupting much of the rest of the formation. One pike squared up and tried to escape, but was quickly surrounded. Fortunately, the left flank was successful in catching a large portion of the Carthaginian cavalry and skirmishers, as well as the prospective home-owning elephants.

As such, both armies found themselves over 25 points with not many turns to go. The Anitgonid infantry was completely outnumbered by the Carthaginian foot and unwilling to mount an offensive. Furthermore, most of the Antigonid cavalry was off the field pursuing routed foes. The pikes turtled up, while the thureos retreated to some rough ground. Unable to reach the now VERY cautious Antigonids before night fall, the Carthaginians proposed a truce and a mutual burying of the dead.

Good game Triarii. An excellent contest of maneuver, hide, and seek.

Triarii finishes murdering my pikes, while I trap half his cavalry against the map's edge and gain some measure of vengeance.

Division C

fikabo(Jewish+Romans) beat GeneralShapur (Spanish) 40:3

On the Spanish side there was a large but narrow mountain in the middle. It was large enough to fit all Spanish units. I decided to use the shape of the mountain that hindered maneuvering and attack from the narrow side to have a quantitative advantage. In addition, my skirmishes wounded many Spaniards and forced attacks on them not to be fired there.
Hence, many fights were fought before the mountain, not on it, which made winning even easier.
The troops from the non-attacked side of the mountain began to descend from above and attack my left wing. If they did that at the very beginning I would have a problem. But it was too late.

Thanks for game.

It looks like you are making quick progress.
As I played with you recently I was surprised that you only have 1 point because you played as well as better scoring players in divC (especially at the beginning of the game).

Division B

edb1815 (Rus w Bulgar ally) defeated Nijis (Byzantine) 53% - 26%

Interesting map with a deep stream running between high ground on both sides cutting through the battlefield. The Byzantines came with cavalry and missile superiority including 2 units of Klibinari. After maneuvering and getting shot up on approach the offensive spearmen with huscarls began to tell on the Byzantine line. Combined arms defeated the wing of Byzantine cavalry after a seesaw battle on the flank.

Well played to my opponent.

Division D

Challenge1 (Viking) defeated KiFi (Sassanids) 46-18

A Viking shieldwall managed to hold most of the Sassanid cavalry while the main battle line engaged the hastily arriving infantry. The battle was constantly evolving as more Sassanids arrived, seemingly every turn the outcome was not clear until the very end once the Dailami foot had been routed. A really good game that could have gone either way, despite what the score says.

Thanks for the fight!

Division A

Triarii - Carthaginian (Hannibal in Italy) with Samnite allies - defeats harveylh – Syracusan 280-211 BC with Carthaginian 235-146 BC ally 64-50

On a flat battlefield with yet another river cutting off 1/3 and a significant wood on the Carthaginian left an echelon advance allowed the Carthaginian right to finally flank and then gain the upper-hand over the backward moving Syracusan left - meanwhile the few Carthaginian lights and a couple of supporting Scutari were seen off by the rebel Carthaginian cavalry and large numbers of light troops on the Syracusan right. However a very fortuitous pursuit for one of Hannibal's Scutari put them firmly in the rear of the engaged Syracusan centre at the same time as the Syracusan left collapsed made it all difficult for Syracuse. A master class in shifting Syracusans in orderly withdrawal then followed keeping the points below 60% until the penultimate move. An earlier reinforcement of (unlucky) failure where Syracusan LI attacked the single Scutari unit left in the woods made reaching the 60% just possible. A good (and long) game.

Division A

Triarii - Carthaginian (Hannibal in Italy) with Samnite allies - defeats MorkinTheFree 46-13

A river across the map this time.
Carthage raced to a hill on the left crossing the river and a Pontic phalanx was caught by MI at a disdvantage in the river after a rash follow up of LI. Meanwhile Carthaginian spears and pseudo legionnaires came straight off the hill and matched up with the Pontic MI until LC and MI outflanked and rolled up the Pontic line before the phalanx and warband could force a way through battling LI and/or disentangle themselves from the river.

Weekly round-up
Geffalrus (Antigonid) posted his third draw this week to stay top of Division A, but he now faces a late challenge from MikeC_81 (Roman) who is currently in sixth place and still has 3 matches to play - against harveylh (Syracusan), Triarii (Carthaginian) and Geffalrus himself. Geffalrus will need to win that match against MikeC_81 if MikeC_81 is victorious in his other 2 matches because MikeC_81 will then have more wins than Geffalrus. At the bottom MorkinTheFree (Pontic) is relegated. Very quiet in Division B this week where Ulysisgrunt (Jewish) lost another match meaning that he has to beat phoyle3290 (Hannibal in Italy) by any score to move above Najanaja (Pontic) and avoid relegation. It is still very exciting in Division C where fikabo (Jewish) has stormed to the top of the table with his his seventh straight win from 7 starts. Both edb1815 (Thracian Hellenistic) and batesmotel (Roman) can still overtake him and a lot will depend on the result of the matches between fikabo versus batesmotel and batesmotel versus edb1815. At the bottom Rob123 (Roman) must decisively beat fellow struggler MikeMarchant (Seleucid) in their last match to avoid automatic relegation. Everything has been decided in Division D now after bomber23 (Syracuse) defeated KiFi (Macedonian) in a close match leaving GeneralKostas (Lysimachid) with the wooden spoon this season.

Unbeaten runs of 3 matches or more
Geffalrus (Division A) 8 matches
desertedfox (Division B) 5 matches
batesmotel (Division C) 5 matches
edb1815 (Division C) 6 matches
fikabo (Division C) 7 matches

Match completion rate (45 matches in total to be played in each division)

Division B - 41 out of 45 matches completed :D
Division C - 36 out of 45 matches completed :D
Division D - 42 out of 45 matches completed :D

These are excellent match completion rates. :D

Weekly round-upJust the relegation issue left to decide in Division A where harveylh (Roman) beat hidde (Parthian) in the key relegation battle. The situation now is that hidde needs 7 points from his last 3 matches to avoid automatic relegation and relegate harveylh. Similarly in Division B, two more defeats this week for General Shapur (Kingdom of Soissons) means that he is odds-on to be relegated now. Division C remains very close where Najanaja (Roman) secured his fifth win to stay 2 points ahead of GDod (Jewish) at the top. It is still mathematically possible for 5 other players to win this division at the moment, including the players who are currently tied in eighth place. MikeMarchant (Ancient British) is edging his way towards the Division D title after posting his seventh win this week. Any sort of win in his last match against Garokan (Roman) will be enough to see off possible late challenges from Barrold713 (Palmyran), Bluefin (Alan), phoyle3290 (Lombard) or second-placed Ulysisgrunt (Kingdom of Soissons). At the bottom GeneralKostas (Frankish) needs one point from his last match against phoyle3290 to consign the wooden spoon to gamercb (Roman).

Unbeaten runs of 3 matches or more
nyczar (Division A) 3 matches
DzonVejn (Division C) 3 matches
Karvon (Division C) 5 matches
Najanaja (Division C) 4 matches
Bluefin (Division D) 5 matches
MikeMarchant (Division D) 8 matches
Ulysisgrunt (Division D) 4 matches

Match completion rate (45 matches in total to be played in each division)
Division A - 35 out of 45 matches completed :D
Division B - 37 out of 45 matches completed :D
Division C - 35 out of 45 matches completed :D
Division D - 35 out of 45 matches completed :D

These are good match completion rates. :D

Weekly round-up
Nothing to report from either Division A or Division B this week. fikabo (polish) has won Division C after posting his eighth win from 8 starts. At the bottom Rob123 (Indian) must decisively win his last match against lydianed (Ghaznavid) and hope that Ulysisgrunt is well beaten by herm (French) in his last match in order to avoid automatic relegation. In Division D Questar17 (Pictish) has moved into contention for automatic promotion with 2 wins this week. He now needs 8 points from his remaining 3 matches to overtake Schweetness101 (Abbasid) whom he has already beaten this season. At the bottom bomber23 (Moravian) and KiFi (Sassanid) desperately need points to avoid the wooden spoon and are yet to play each other.

Unbeaten runs of 3 matches or more
Nosy_Rat (Division A) 5 matches
Geffalrus (Division B) 5 matches
melm (Division B) 4 matches
fikabo (Division C) 8 matches
markwatson (Division C) 3 matches
gamercb (Division D) 5 matches
Questar17 (Division D) 6 matches

Match completion rate (45 matches in total to be played in each division)
Division A - 35 out of 45 matches completed :D
Division B - 31 out of 45 matches completed :|
Division C - 39 out of 45 matches completed :D
Division D - 36 out of 45 matches completed :D

These are generally good match completion rates, Division B is a bit slow.

Player of the week
Questar17 (Division D) with 2 wins this week to give himself a chance of automatic promotion.:D

Weekly round-up
ianiow (Arab) looks firm favourite now to complete a treble of championships in the Biblical section after finishing on 28 points, just one point ahead of a tremendous effort by desertedfox (Egyptian) in his first season at the top level. It is still mathematically possible for sunnyboy (Lydian) to reach 29 points but ne needs 4 decisive victories in his last 4 matches to do it. At the bottom a poor sequence of results for nyczar (Assyrian) has left him in a relegation fight with XLegione (Achaemenid Persian) and they have still to play each other. No change at the top in Division B where markwatson360 (Median) needs to win his last three matches decisively to overtake Ulysisgrunt (Cypriot), who has finished with 30 points. markwatson360's remaining opponents are Barrold713 (Boiotian League), General Shapur (Egyptian) and lunecastle (Assyrian). At the bottom gamercb (Achaemenid Persian) managed to grab 2 wins from his final 3 matches to go above Barrold713 but Barrold713 just needs one point from his last 2 matches to consign gamercb to the wooden spoon.

Unbeaten runs of 3 matches or more
desertedfox (Division A) 5 matches
ianiow (Division A) 4 matches and finished
Challenge1 (Division B) 3 matches
markwatson360 (Division B) 4 matches
garymann (Division B) 3 matches

Match completion rate (45 matches in total to be played in each division)
Division A - 40 out of 45 matches completed :D
Division B - 37 out of 45 matches completed :D

These are very good match completion rates.

Player of the week
desertedfox (Division A) with 2 wins this week to finish with 7 wins overall in his first season at the top level. :D
