A question about no impact capabilities

Post by GeneralKostas »

In two occasions my warbands hadn't impact capabilities against cavalry in melee. Is it possible an impact foot unit to loose its impact role in the battle?

I attach two screenshots from the league games in Late Antiquity.

From Section 14.2.1 of the Manual (The Impact POA Table);

Impact foot. +100 vs elephants or any mounted, unless the foot are charging mounted shock troops.

Your opponents in both cases are Lance armed cavalry, which count as mounted shock troops, so the Impact Foot get no Impact POA in those cases.

It's best to avoid lancers if you're using impact foot. The exception is if you can pin them into a prolonged melee, but even then, there's an uncomfortably high chance of suffering a disruption or the dreaded instant fragmentation during the charge. If you absolutely have to go toe to toe with lancers, try to soften them up with skirmisher fire first. The only hope the impact foot have against the lancers is the more fragile cavalry unit giving way first due to lack of manpower. It doesn't help that bog-standard noble lancers are actually cheaper than warbands.

You have right. In both battles it wasn't my plan to use the warbands against lancers. But my Frankish army haven't strong cavalry. So during the battles i used first my noble cavalry against the lancers. Then the Brythonic foot. The no impact POA of the warbands damaged my plans. Now i know, i must choose something different for the next League games. An army with stronger cavalry.
