2 rout instances

Post by Andy1972 »

hey guys, me and a friend were playing Sunday and 2 routs came up.. I want to double check if we did them right. First instance.. A unit of cav routed from my def spear.. After the intial rout i did not catch him.. So during the JAP he must go towards his base line correct? However this would take him into the rear of another one of my units.. He did not have enough room to side step or drop frontage.. So i said he was destroyed.. Did we do that right? 2nd instance.. Another Cav unit routed.. This is during the intial rout. In his rout their were 2 units, one of mine and one of his.. He had room to side step one or the other unit.. (he had to run into one or the other) Between us was a space but not big enough for a stand.. He was wondering if he could elect to run into me to destroy the unit rather than burst through his friendly unit.. I did not think so., so we went with him bursting through his unit. I wish now i took some pics, but you get the just of it. :) Thanks!

I am speaking from memory as I do not have the books with me

first case : It seems to me you did right , but defensive spearmen do not pursue cavalry ( or do they have to test to do it ? ) .

second case : he has to burst trough his own unit

If routing for the first time, everyone (nearly, artillery, etc) pursues a broken unit.

Don't have the rules in front of me to cite a page but IIRC:
"Non-shock foot can choose to pursue a broken unit of mounted by passing a CMT to do so" or something to that effect.
So not only do non-shock foot not have to pursue a unit of mounted that they break but they must pass a CMT to do so.
So the exception list you mention Madcam is larger than it first appears.

So you do NOT have to pursue if you don't want to? Even in the inital pursuit? I thought you had to during the intial.. Anywho, i will be doing some rereading it seems. :)

To clear up

You don't have to pursue but have option to try if you want to.

If a rout is blocked by enemy such that you cannot get past you are detroyed and removed.

You cannot shift into enemy only away from them, you are trying to avoid them and trust must attempt to do so.

If shifts etc. cannot get past then you don't shift at all and just go directly backwards. If this hits any enemy you are gone; if it hits any friends you burst through them.

So its:

Shift etc. if this gets your round
Otherwise
Go dead ahead and take your medicine whatever that may be
