stepping forward

Post by deadtorius »

this happend in a game this weekend, My roman heavies charged a unit of lights screening a unit of spanish heavies. The lights evaded but my lousy die roll of 2 left me 1 MU short of the spanish heavies.

I brought my elephants up ready to charge into the spanish overlap on my next turn, they are now 3 MU from the spanish heavies and were in base contact with the romans prior to the whole charge thing, just so you get the idea of how it looked.

Spanish heavies charge the romans, need 1 MU, they still have 2 MU left so step forward to hit the elephants with 2 bases, but since the elephants were 3MU back that means breaking contact with the unit so we staggered one base and let the 2nd contact the elephants, the BG was still in base contact with one base without frontal contact (which we counted as an overlap versus the romans)

end result was 10 pak of Spanish, 8 stands of spanish heavies engaged romans, 1 stand is staggered forward but still in side contact with its battle group, last stand is in contact with elephants and the in contact with the its battle group.

Now the question is was this the right move to make or should we not have allowed the spanish to step forward in this case, or is it necessary to keep all bases in contact with the battle group in this situation?

All units stepping forward must contact the enemy, so if I am reading it correctly the spanish could not have stepped forward.

Hmmm...so since the one file couldn't contact enemy without losing contact w the bases already fighting the Roman heavies, no stepping forward should have happened. We'll get all this yet!!!

If '2' leaves you only 1MU short, your usual move would have contacted the Spanish heavies, so you shouldn't have rolled for a VMD. Chargers only have a VMD if all targets within normal charge reach evade.

I assumed that since they evaded I had to roll vmd regardless, well that certainly changes things.
Thanks for pointing that out. :D

Remaining move has no relevance. You move untill you hit something, then regardless of distance moved you step forward to a max of 2 MU forward from your position at contact.

That's a good thing to stick in the back of my 'useful tricks' catalogue.
