SOLUTION: Uninstall game (from default or custom folder). Reinstall using "run as admin". Install patch (as admin if necessary). Downloads are available from your "My Page" at the Slitherine site.


There ought to be a tool in the Empires launcher or something to help you download and install newer releases.
Packaging the game in an AppImage would help with this issue.

linux, yep great, not..

i'm happy you get it to work on something else, i really am, but it seems you wish for everyone else to use linux tools or programs, while we all use and it works for us, windows, which the game was designed and based to work with, so can't see that altering any time soon

Thanks, loki100. To see that updater option, start the game using autorun.exe, rather than empires.exe.

I am trying to use the automatic updater, and it is failing with the following error message:

Error:
Unable to download file.
An error occured while trying to open an FTP file.

then either your browser or firewall has blocked the port or program from working

port needed is 21 and file takes 1 second for me to download

if the game was installed on a admin computer as install as admin, run as admin, then the program makes the firewall setup for itself to update also, if not, then a manual download is the only option, as long as the browser used, supports it

using a FTP program works, as long as that also supports the protocols for windows,

or if that doesn't work, use the support page and my page version and download direct from there, without going through the game

I am greatly enjoying playing little Factions in backwater places on the map and getting to know the world better that way. In a fun multi-player, Picts and Brigantes are cooperating and will defend against Rome. To assist with sea power, Picts have colonized NW Africa. Now I want to have a little campaign in a new game focused on the petty rivalries of the minor factions that dwell there.

Might we have some beautiful artwork for Orcadian stones, the Ring of Brodgar, for example?
