Perfect British Isles

Post by uneducated »

If you wish to focus on developing the British Isles, which structures would you build and where would you place them?

Olive Oil is useful in many ways, but where is the most reliable, nearby region to source it? Is it worth invading?

A remote colony? Would it be worth colonizing a Region in NW Africa, to somehow massively extend your trade range back to Britian? What would you build there, if so?

What would be a fast way to gain papyrus in Britain? It is useful for culture.

How can you start producing Marble in Britain? There isn't any at the start of the game. That is very useful for culture too.

By which Turn are you able to have Picts reach Civilization level 2? What is your technique? It is needed to stop Civil Wars on the leaders death.

No good asking me. My first MP game as Brit... is not going too well, but then,"I know nothing"

Still fun 'tho. Who will be the first player to visit dear old Blighty? Who will win the rugby World Cup?

Oh dear, I digress...

The Olive Zone is: Malaca, Massilia, Epidamnia, Corcyra, Cephallonia, Beotia, Arcadia, Atticus, Ionia, Creta Occidentalis, Creta Orientalis, Phrygia, Parthenius, Issus, Tingitana, Musalamia, Oea, Sardinia, Latium, Aufidus, Lucania, Apulia, Bruttium, Heraei, Eryx, Lesbos, Chios, Bythinia, Orontes, Samarai, Lixus, Rusucuru, Saldae, Ampsaga, Tunes, Arsinoe, Achaia, Iudea, Byzacium, Thysdrus, Africa, Zeugis, Cyrenaica. (Copied from that wonderful resource - Grognerd's Guide to Structures, Trade Goods and the Economy https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/ ... 1796786043 ) I think you'd be better off taking a region where its available and continuing the expansion in that province to get control of it.

Fastest way to Papyrus is Wells (T1 Agr.) + 2 more T1 Agr. -> Irrigation System (T2 Agr.) + 3 more T1/T2 Agr. -> Irrigation Canals (T3 Agr.) which gives you papyrus. You'll be reshuffling quite a bit.

For marble you need to build a Quarry (T1 Inf.) which unlocks marble then you need to get lucky or reshuffle a lot to get Marble Vein (T1 Inf.)

Haven't played Picts/Caledonians long enough to get to Civ. lvl. 2, good luck getting there :)

Thanks, that is a good help. With so much Agri needed, probably Ireland's East coast would be a good place (farming and reaching England and maybe Gall in trade.) Or Trying to build it on the South or East English coast. It will require specializing a Region and dedicated building.

Is there much advantage to having a trade good available earlier than other Empires? Would it have considerable trade benefits?

Quarrying on the coast would be best for trading and moving Marble around, and as Britain is not big, maybe somewhere on the South too.

Also, if you do end up with some Papyrus in Britain, the whole of Europe will want it. There will never be enough. Is there some way to springboard off your Irrigation Canals to somehow end up with another source of Papyrus for international exports?

One more question, which other resources apart from Grognerd's are there that are so useful?

if I've understood you properly - then ... thats not how the trade model works. Most civ 1 nations have a trade range of 2 and civ 2 at 3 (7.3.2 of the manual), so that limits you substantially.

Also the same good can be traded many times,

Most of the trade benefits would be within your own nation, being able to trade it to yourself and not having to pay extreme prices for a trade good from far away. A single regions trade good(s) can be traded without limit, can't recall right now if trade range is a limiting factor. (Please correct me if I'm wrong on that.) Its good to have the same trade good(s) spaced throughout your nation for bonus and internal trade.

My current Rome game is about 200 turns in and the Empire is starting to feel a bit rickety... need to take a close look at the money and culture to get better balance there and hunt down the closest objective to drop the age, bad thing is they are pretty far flung thanks to the hallucinogens being fed to one of my incompetent rulers LOL. Its been an interesting game so far, started off with a complete imbecile for a ruler that was replaced by one slightly less incompetent and then another dunce cap wearer before I got a very good one and now a decent one. Another incompetent and Rome is headed for the dustbin of history :D
