Tips on Playing as Carthage in Multiplayer

Post by Schweetness101 »

Hello,

I know that there are a number of Carthaginian lists out there, so more specifically in the upcoming FOG2DL I've chosen Carthaginian (Hannibal in Africa) 202 BC. I thought it would be a neat challenge because it doesn't have the same obvious strengths as say Rome or a Hellenistic pike army, but it has a lot of variety. I've found in playing some practice games that against pike armies it helps to simply outnumber them with a great mass of medium infantry to get in lots of flanks, but against Rome getting as much heavy infantry and elite mediums plus lots of lights and cavalry and elephants has worked well.

Are there any veterans out there who have played the various Carthaginian lists a lot and have any good advice?

thanks

haha yeah I've noticed that even when I do manage to win as Carthage it's just barely, but I am getting better with them. They have a pretty good record across the digital league seasons:

Carthaginian, Hannibal in Africa (202BC) 53-4-33

I think that's across 1,2,3,4 and 5 from here:

So, somebody is good with them lol.

It seems like you have to either:
A) make the most of superiority in cavalry, elephants and some lights to rout the enemy cavalry and lights before your own line breaks. Do that while trying to anchor the enemy on a handful of decent spear units while you maneuver elsewhere. Kind of a race to see which breaks first, your infantry or their cavalry.
B) Use a huge amount of medium infantry plus some cavalry to overwhelm and flank the enemy line. Seems to work well against smaller, less maneuverable infantry lines like Hellenistic pike armies that aren't able to field enough pikes to cover so many medium infantry units.

I find they are very fun and challenging to play as but I wonder if there are some Carthage experts out there with good advice.
