Questions on combat mechanics

Post by apec »

I have a few questions on the combact mechanics. By the way, the more I understand the way the system works the more I like it :D well done !

1. What is the maths of physical attack vs Armour, how is calculated the kill/wound result?
2. What is the effect of the armour piercing bonus in case of a) physical attack b) magic attack
3. Is magical attack only countered by defender moral or the defender armour has an effect?
4. Is it worth assigning an item that provides armour piercing bonus to a unit that has magic attack only?

Thank you very much for any clarification.
Kind regards

Hi, we're glad you like it!

1) Each point of armour (or morale) increases the damage resistance by roughly 7% (1/14).
Whenever a unit receives enough damage that a squadmember is completely wounded, there is a change it dies instead. This chance can be increased/decreased by different factors such as aura, global debuffs, etc.

2) Each point of armour piercing ignores one point of armour (or morale, if its a magical attack).

3) Yes, magical attacks are only countered by Morale (and the general damage resistance) but not by Armour.

4) Correct, "armour piercing" also applies to magical attacks.

Can I hijack the thread for a question of my own?

I have trouble figuring out why unit do the damage they do, per the picture linked below my devourer should do 195 damge. I have Krells staff so that's +50% vs undeads which has no magic resistance so should be 293 damage. However the actual damage is 68 to the skeleton infantry and I have no idea why.

I also tried to remove Krells staff but that does not affect the damage at all indicating that krells staff is broken. This does not explain the low damage as even without the staff the damage should be 195 (unless I'm missing something)

Because your Devourer only has 3 attacks with their sword (inspect the weapon tooltip), thus he can only kill 3 units of the skeleton squad.

I noticed the three attack, just didn't draw the max 1 kill per hit conclusion. This does explain a lot. I do feel that I've one shot killed units with charging trolls despite only 4 attack (units with more than 4 units). Anything to that or have I either encoutered a bug or possibly misremember?

That is interesting because I think I have seen the same. Now I am wondering if that is due to the fact that a charge attack counts as an additional attack, producing de facto 2x damage.

Correct. Each combat phase calculates attacks separately, that's why charging is so powerful.
