Losing Battles

When it comes to a battle if I let the AI resolve the battle I keep losing even though my combat
power is much greater - easily 50-80% higher. When I resolve the very same battle
by exporting it and playing it myself - I easily win. It is tedious. What is going
wrong?

Multiple issues I suspect.....

What is the terrain ?
What troops are you using in that terrain ?
What bonuses do you and the opposing Generals have in this terrain ?
How experienced are your troops compared to the opposition ?
How many if any troops do you have with support ability ?

If you play the battles out in Empires using the option of one head to head match up at a time you will clearly see the reasons in numbers why each match up is won or lost.

There is a RNG element but it is far far outweighed by intelligent unit selection, good generals and the correct terrain.

Having said that fighting the battles out using FoG2 gives the player a significant advantage of they understand the system and unbalances the Empires game against the AI.

as above.

also use the display mode for autoresolve - which individual challenges did you win? Did you have missing potential factors - leadership, support units etc?

could you deploy all your army? I've lost battles when I had a notional power of 800+ vs an enemy of 200, mainly as it happened in restricted terrain.

then think of your army compositions. You really need a lot of skirmishers - these are a real force multiplier. if you have a HI based army, it is going to be relatively weak in broken terrain.

There is usually a reason and a solution

The previous points cover it nicely; Generals, Terrain, Support Units, Experience and Frontage.

Frontage is quite important. In one of my SP games I frequently have an army of 40 fighting armies of 200 and winning. This is mainly because I have very experience cretan archers owning the skirmish phase, and then 6 or so really experienced (elite), fresh units, that are good in the terrain, winning against 6 or so moderately good units, which are often tired or exhausted from the skirmish. The other 194 units rarely come into the game. If they do, then my elite units, or their elite replacements, will keep winning until the enemy loses.
