Totally Stuck: How to remove units from a force?

Post by MarkShot »

It seems that I can only place units into another force if the force has a general.

For example, I have four cavalry units, but I wanted all my general bonuses invested in the pikes. Because ultimately, it is the pikes who will win or lose the fight.

I split my four cav units to cover the two flanks. Now, the game thinks they are a single force. But I, the player, think they are two forces.

I know no way to have commander's intent realized here.

Or do I? Help!

Thanks.

If somehow all of the cavalry are already in the same command as each other, presumably as a result of switching one of the generals from the cavalry to the infantry, and then switching his original unit to the other cavalry command, you are stuck. But you can still move the units as individual units and just not use the group move command. It only works for the first few turns anyway.

Alternatively, you might be able to move half of them to the CinC's command, and then move him (and any infantry units in his command) to the command of one of the other infantry sub-generals. The C-in-C does not need any units in his command as he can "float" anyway.

Of course I could point out that putting all your generals into the pikes, and none in the cavalry wings, is unhistorical and something of an exploit. It is one that we don't forbid, but it has potential pitfalls, as you have discovered.

You are right. This is not a big issue.

As long as you answered. I am a computer nerd. So, the only two close BG ports to PC that I ever really played was 1830PC (a game of railroads and the stock market) and chess.

I thought I would never enjoy a TBS game (only RTS and WEGO), but this is a great game. The UI is simply superb, and mechanics look slyly simple, but are quite compelling as one understands more.

Thank you.

I do hope the unit grouping system is redone at some point. I spend quite a bit of time before every battle arranging my generals so that everyone has a slice of the front, someone's leading the cavalry and C-in-C has no sub-group of his own.

Standard group select with ctrl-click and assign the selection to groups with ctrl-1 to ctrl-9 would be great quality-of-life improvement.
