Barbarians - what periods , earliest to latest.

Post by Keith »

So use the term Barbarians to describe impact foot armies.
Can anyone give me a list from earliest to latest that these style armies existed ?

Celts to Franks ?

As far as the Greeks were concerned anyone who wasn't Greek was a barbarian.

I suspect that there was a similar term in use by the Assyrians, Hittites, and even Sumerians.

It sounds like you are using 'barbarians' as shorthand for Undrilled Impact Foot Swordsmen, rather than as a cultural term; in which case:

The Visigoths can be almost all Impact Foot until 621; the Frisian and Old Saxon list says it ends in 'the early 6th century AD, but still supplies allied contingents of up to 44 Impact Foot to Charlemagne until 804; and the Later Scots Islesmen and Highlanders can be over 50% Impact Foot (but only as MF with Bow*) all the way to 1493!

EDIT: The earliest Undrilled Impact Foot Swordsmen in published lists appears to be the Gauls, whose list starts in the 4th century BC. I suspect, though, that we may see earlier impact foot either in Swifter than Eagles or as enemies of early Rome (whenever those lists appear).

Celts to Franks ?
Roman legionary impact foot might not be very happy about that use of the term.

I seem to remember seeing Barbarians in the 70s, I'm sure Dave Madigan still remembers 'the try'. :D
