Grand Campaign East core.

Post by stormbringer3 »

I'm takikng a break from the West playing the East again. I'm starting Kursk and I've got forty units plus the SE units that I can deploy. I've seen some posts implying that as you progress through the years the number of core units you can deploy starts to drop. If so, how low will the non SE deployable units number go?
Thanks for any info.

You can deploy up to 33 non SE units at the start of the first '44 scenario. The number of slots goes up a little as the year progresses.

Around Kursk is a high water mark at 40. 44 East begins with 33 (Korson pocket) with most scenarios at 36 or 37 slots. Most scenarios in 45 East are 36 bslots, with 45 for the Berlin defense and 50 for Berlin redux.

Yes, the deployable number drops to 33 at the beginning of 44.

You do get another SE slot in 44, bringing the SE limit up to 7. It will go up to 8 at the start of 45.

Thank you for the answers. I've got a mix of units that I really like. What type do you not deploy when you have to leave them in reserve?
Thanks again.

Depends on terrain, what I think I am facing and what the objectives are. As an example, I have just started Korsun pocket with 33 deployment slots - so I will be leaving just over 40 units out. As I expect a lot of armour and to have to be mobile in defending the centre of the map I have loaded up on Tigers, Panthers and Elefants at the expense of infantry (only 4 units). There is sufficient open terrain to catch and eliminate the Russian infantry before they reach objectives which offer close defence terrain, If they dig in there it will be difficult to get them out. Nevertheless the priority is to destroy enemy armour as, once that is gone, I will own the battlefield. I have a decent amount of artillery, air units and other types, it is just infantry where I would have taken 9 or 10 if I could.

A different scenario might mean leaving different units behind.

Interesting. For Korsun, I did take infantry, but left home the A/Ts and Bombers. There is a lot of close terrain in Korsun that can be exploited, keep an eye out for the swamps in particular.

For me, terrain is a factor but also the mission briefing. Using Korsun again as an example, the briefing warned of heavy air presence, so I went without bombers in order to free up my fighters for pure air superiority duties. It worked well. :)

Thanks for the great advice. I have 3 strategic bombers that I use every scenario. I usually get 2-3 hits plus ammo and fuel stripping. However, for Korsun, I guess they'll have to stay in the hanger.

Is it possible to defeat the Russians at the end of the game? If so what do you need

Yes, Take the path that leads to the Epilogue scenario and score the DV's where necessary. Simple (not).

Decisive victories at Berlin and Berlin Redux.

Berlin isn't too bad if you have a decent experienced core, it's an urban scenario, so if you ignored infantry you may have some issues defending some areas. You need to hold out 20+ turns and attack for the last 10.

Berlin Redux is 40 turns I think but you'll be facing top tier units with top tier experience. But the victory objective is to actually go on the offensive and kill HVTs, so you can win it in 15 - this one is more ideal if you have lots of tanks.

Personally, I don't find the 'win' very satisfying, there are a lot of unanswered questions and it is basically a handwave, but it's still a GC 'victory' so if you get it, enjoy it.
