Painted Myself Into an Afrika Korps-ner

Post by AdmiralMotti89 »

So I am in my first AK playthrough and might have bit off more than I can chew. I am in British India on Colonel difficulty, and I have been going after 3 achievements simultaneously: Denied Overstrength, Denied Elite Replacements, and Denied Reinforcements. I have 33 out of 40 deployable units (and 3 SE Tigers), as well as 5300 Prestige. This is at the start of the scenario, restarting after a rough attempt at winning with a DV.

I thought I was doing well luring those Firefly tanks and whatever the other British ones are into the jungle and taking them out with infantry, but when I got to the east coast of India, the naval bombardment was crazy and I was pretty much out of bombers (they served me well against the Western fleet but allied air seemed too much to handle, especially since denied elites has my handful of FW-190's at useless experience. I was using my Tigers and lots of artillery to take out other tanks, covering everything fairly well with ground AA (but darn cloudy weather makes it hard to hit anything), but at about turn 25 it was clear i was nowhere close.

Should I just bite the bullet and at least reinforce my units when the get understrength, and save that achievement for another campaign? Or maybe there are some good Italian Wunderwaffen than could turn the tide? I'd appreciate any tips on this scenario that factor in low experience and not overstrengthed units.

It is a while since I last played AK but I seem to remember you do get some naval assets. Can you get them close enough to make a suicide attack to distract the British fleet for a turn or two while you grab the last objectives?

As for the Steam achievements, AK is a relatively tricky campaign to try and get them on. You would do better to consider Allied Corps (much easier) or, possibly the best choice, the Grand Campaign 39.

There's an awful lot of capital ships to the east, and you probably lose most of your modest navy by the time you round the southern cape even with three experienced strat bombers. I did manage to concentrate these at teh right time and severely weakened the british fleet, but the sheer number of naval attacks means that many units will get heavily suppressed and damaged. I just resigned myself to losing experienced units as it was the last scenario, but the last time I played I replaced a few destroyed land units with extra strat bombers for fleet management - ended with 5 or 6 in total including the 3 experienced ones. I was running a bit low on prestige by then but was close enough to a DV I could afford a few losses.

Bear in mind that even a Ju88 or He111 (and possibly even a Do17) will do some naval damage and can be helpful for driving away ships even if the damage is minimal.
I don't know if that helps much, but it worked OK for me last time.

Thanks, it sounds like I need to save up to kill some ships before moving across. 3 battleships is nuts.
