Cretan Archer Bizarrity

So I was looking through my one Spartan army, checking for the master fletcher upgrades.

In the stack with the army, two of the archers show Combat Strength 8 + Attack 2 (+1)(Which I am assuming is the fletcher upgrade?) + Defense 3 + Range Attack 8:

The weirdness happens when I detach that unit and Combat Strength becomes 9 + Attack 2 (+1) and Defense is now 4 (+1) + Range Attack same:

What gives? Why would it change just from splitting off from the army? AND, if merged back in, shows as in the first image.

Doh...stupid commander gives a -1 to defense.

Finally I see the msg! (I never noticed the msg thing at the bottom left of the screen! )

Only one unit per upgrade site gets upgraded per turn. If nothing else happens there, the upgrade is shown by a helmet symbol. By moving the mouse over the helmet you can find out which unit was upgraded.
