Take Region Now or Wait Until Objective??

Playing Iberia, Carthage declares war on me. I conquer the two regions it controls in Spain easily. But should I have waited until my leader declares one or more of them an objective? Am I missing out on a progress token because of my early capture?

Possibly? Although the next objective in the chain you don't control should get selected instead.
