Start up crash

Post by Bennit464 »

Hello
I run Gladius out of GoG galaxy. I havent played it since 2018 and it worked fine. A few crashes here and there but otherwise fine. I recently brought the Tyranids DLC and installed the most recent version of the game. Before the game can properly start I get this error

Vulkan.hpp:14: void _cdecl proxy::video::throwVulkanException(enumVkResult,const class std::basic_string<char,struct std::char_traits<char>,class std::allocator<char> > &): Failed to create Vulkan instance. Return code -3.

Gladius has encountered a problem and needs to close. Please contact support with game logs and save games.

I will attach my system details in a zip file

Well,the Geek Squad [the tech troops from a local retailor who sets up and fixes computers] just left and said that short of getting a new video card et al, I can't at this point play a game I loved for 63 hours playing time due to this change. Frankly, I'm sorely disappointed as I feel I've had the rug pulled out from under me. I would like a refund [a store credit is fine]

as these aren't recognized error reports as asked for in the link, seems it's either not a windows version and maybe linux, so will leave it for the developers, i can't find what could be the error so can't advice i'm sorry to say, and refunds aren't given on site version only steam, then steam rules apply, 2 hour use game time only etc etc

@doc99

From your printout of your system, I noticed this line:

Code: Select all

Video Adapter
•Video_Caption: ATI Radeon HD 5800 Series
Since version 1.2.7 of the game, the developers have switched from using OpenGL as a graphics library, to Vulkan. You can read this in the text they added to the update.

Vulkan is supposedly the better choice, for the future, as this technically gives better performance with how videocards are made since ... well, like a decade.
However, for older videocards such as the one you have, Vulkan is not supported in the hardware and never will be. OpenGL is the only way to go (or directx if you are on Windows, but Gladius doesn't support DirectX either).

Supposedly the developers could program Gladius in such a way that it can run both on OpenGL only videocards as well as on videocards that support Vulkan, but apparently they have opted to just switch the underlying graphics library in one minor version update.
By doing this they have changed the range of supported video cards.
Your card is outside of the supported range now and yes that should qualify for a refund. It was supported at the moment of purchase, but an software update changed that.

Mind you, they are offering a 'beta' branch of Gladius via a dropdown in Steam (open game properties in Steam), which is actually an older version of the game (1.2.6) from when they still only supported OpenGL. So you can technically still play the game, but you likely won't be getting any more updates.
