Hello

I just read the manual and I have 2 questions about diplomacy

will you do a Dev Diaries dedicated?

more specifically i have questions on State client:

--- if i am junior and i break, will the war be inevitable if my current relationship is under 50? under 25?
and even if the war is not declared I think the current relationship will fall no?

--- if I am the senior and absorb that it will happen automatically?
or rather according to a certain threshold of current relationship?
if yes above 50? above 75?
if the junior refuses it is the automatic war or simply the current relation which will fall?

war is quite likely if you have low relations but still may not happen if the other power is already at war etc. So its a gamble.

You ask to absorb the client as a diplomatic option, so it has a base % to happen as with any such offer. If its accepted, you absorb, if not then the client state relationship carries on.

La guerre est très probable si vous avez de faibles relations. Mais, vous pouvez éviter cela s'ils sont déjà en guerre.

Absorber l’État client est une option diplomatique, elle peut donc échouer ou non.

Interesting.

By the way are there restrictions on the number of diplomatic actions per turn ?

So at the beginning of a game can I send out three co-operation agreement requests to three different countries, plus a request for peace to say a fourth country and declare war on a fifth all in turn one if I wanted ?

Yes, in theory you can send a message to every nation. But if the target is already considering one request (and this might take a few turns) then you can't send them another. Also there is the potential to lose legacy if you ask for something the target thinks is an insult, so its rarely a good idea to try and exploit say a 1% success chance.

Hi Thierry

You can indeed see the % chance along with all the modifiers that result in that % chance....

For example.....if you are a) fighting alone against the state that you are trying for peace with,
and b) that state is winning
and c) that state has allies

don't expect success unless the target state has a very high war exhaustion number :wink:

last question for client state (I have not seen any details about this in the manual)

1_2: yes must be at peace first.

Once a state is a client the only diplomatic actions it can take is to break the agreement or agree to be absorbed. So you can't be indpendently attacked. or attack anyone on your own.

3 - yes, but you are the player so you choose how to respond to any diplomatic request. So can refuse. The AI uses a scoring system to decide how likely it is to accept something - this is easy to see in the game but we didn't put it in the manual as the variables will probably change as the game develops.

As to (1), you could simply want a strong buffer state, I've set them up with German tribes since its so hard to conquer deep into Germany. In this case, its a little bit better than an alliance for me as I get some income and they have to join in a war.

Other times, yes I might be aiming for long term take over, say with Rome and the Etruscans? Or Macedonia and Epirus. So I guess it depends on how you see your state developing in that part of the map.

Thank you very much for all these precisions :)

once the game is released we will surely see more diplomacy because with few turns the players on youtube show mostly conquests :)

but with the release of the game we will see maybe let's play on 500 laps :)

my goal would be to play Carthage and acquire areas with carrot and stick :)

preferably the carrot to reserve my armies against Rome!

so I see myself absorbing regions in Hispania or Africa by doing battle minimun

it would be more a rise in power of my Empire

the most peacefully possible in Hispania and Africa and the hardest by the war in Italy :)

it will probably be quite long (because absorb must surely take time to succeed) but if it frees me troops for Italy and limit revolts = cool

so it's a different approach to a buffer state but I hope it's possible because it's more interesting than just conquering a province every turn like the usual games

to your opinion it is feasible ?

yes

I think Carthage is ideal for someone who tries the game as a diplomatic and economic approach. Because you are good at trade, you can spend a lot on diplomacy, so I give money to possible allies. It is good to see if you can make an alliance with the Etruscans - that can really stop Rome. Also in Spain, some regions you need to conquer but others can be allies/clients/later absorbed.

effectively the Punics have been allied with the Etruscans

for example during the Battle of Alalia took place between 540 BC and 535 BC off the coast of Corsica between Greeks and the Allied Etruscans and Carthaginians. A Punic-Etruscan fleet of 120 ships defeated at Greek force Phocaean of 60 ships
