Former WHFB playing FoG? -another basing question

Post by n10cd12 »

I would like to know how people that have played whfb and are now using their 25mm's for FoG are actually basing their figures.

It seems most folks would not want to rebase at all and would then either use base sizes in a factor of 20mm (20mmx20mm base for infantry), so either 60mm frontage or 80mm. Just 3 figures to a FoG base seems small, but then bouncing up to 80mm makes the untis seem too large.

What are most people playing? What are the good and bad aspects of each? If you use 60mm frontage do you increase the MU to 1.5 inches? If you use an 80mm frontage do you increase the MU to 2 inches?

Do you usually play just 600points instead of 800?

Increasing all the ranges seems to make the game board much smaller.

I haven't played any 25mm games yet, but I have a bunch of dark age saxons that I'd like to use for the new book.

Thanks!

I haev seen a number of WAB armies used for FoG with three infantry figures per 'base' and two cavalry on a sabot base for all mounted.

As long as you are clear in defining that these are cavalry and these are light horse it is fine.

The MU for 25mm depends a lot on the size of the table. If you use a larger table then a 40mm MU works fine but most 25mm games I have seen are played with 1" MUs on 6 by 4 or 8 by 4 tables.

The standard for 25mm tournament games in the UK is 650 on a 6 by 4 with 1" MU.

Yeesh I meant WAB, not WHFB... No such thing as a Wessex army in WHFB...lol.

Great feedback though!

That makes sense and thanks for always being helpful Hammy.

Speaking as a WAB player too......My regular opponents and I have not rebased our used for WAB minies. For WAB our foot were/are on 20mm square plastic bases. We are using foot (NON-skirmishers) 3 minies to a 60mm long base. The skirmishers are based two to a 60mm base. The Cav/hvy/knts are based 2 on a 60mm by 50mm base. We use skirmish cav for light horse.

We use a 4 by 8 foot battlefield. We are using 1 and a half inches per MU. We have been using the starter armies listed in the various suppliments. We have played a couple of armies at 720 points. We used starter armies and added 120 points to them....YES we followed the minimum/maximums listed for the armies.

So far no local indies are supporting FoG, that we know of. We are all old farts who have a "couple of years each" as wargamers. I have 40 plus years the rest of the guys have 35 plus years. Well the old man of the group only has 5 years of wargaming.

Hi,
Yes I have used my WAB armies in FOG and it workes very well to and you do not have to rebaes your army.
Cav/Knights 2x figures on a 60mm frontage by 50mm depth.
light horse 1 figure to a base you can use the 60mm frontage by 40mm depth base for this.
Heavy Foot 3 figures to a base which will give you your 60mm frontage

Hi All,
Yes if you are playing 650 point or the starter armies in the army books 6ft by 4ft tables are OK, over 650 point games then you require a 8ft by 4/5ft table

in 2 weeks time I will be using my Post-Roman British starter army (28mm Arthur's WAB army) V Norman's (Duke William starter army) in the new Wolves from the Sea book
