Who would lead a non General unit?

Field of Glory II is a turn-based tactical game set during the Rise of Rome from 280 BC to 25 BC.

Who would lead a non General unit?

Post by Mord »

I love having names for units in wargames, it gives a lot more intimacy to the battle knowing Sgt Jones' squad just held off a German counter attack, or Cpl. Baker just put a Sherman round through the StuG as opposed to 1st Platoon or C Tank. So, I've been wondering if I decided to name some units while playing a campaign and I go with a leader name as opposed to a group name, would Captain (insert name) be an appropriate (non general/sub general) leader for a unit on an ancient or dark ages battlefield?

Thanks.

P.S. It would be a nice feature if we could rename units in custom battles as well.

Hi Mord,

I presume you are the same Mord as I see in the Combat Mission forums as you live in the same bunker. Here is a link to a general listing of Military ranks starting with ancient ones. I was just browsing this very same thing before I checked to see if the forums here were back up.

Sure am. And I know you from there as well. Been seeing quite a lot of CM guys here. Made joining this forum almost like home.

Excellent, this was gonna be my next step if captain was wrong! It's the perfect jumping off point for further research. Thanks, man.

Looks like captain is best designated to smaller units (at least for the Greeks) that hover around the 250 mark like Cav, Javs, Light Archers etc. For authenticity and historical flavor I can use the army of origin's equivalent rank name. Ex: For Greek Cav I could use "hipparch" instead of captain or "lokhagos" for javs and archers. Then the same for the rank that would lead a bigger unit like a Phalanx or Hoplites. Rinse and repeat for other nations. If worst comes to worst and I can't find the equivalent name for a more obscure nation I could just type "captain" into google translate and have it give me the name in the language of that army (LOL. or just use captain etc.). Doesn't have to be perfect (I'll try to be as accurate as I can), it'll just be cooler and more immersive personalizing my units.
