On the other hand he has yet to pick up the challenge so maybe he is off sunning himself on an Almalfi beach and I get a bye into the next round

3rd Round
harveylh (Sassanid Persians 591-628 AD) defeats SpeedyCM (Carthaginians, Hannibal in Africa 202 BC) 62-51.
Hard fought game. Carthaginians are a tough army for Persians. SpeedyCM used his skirmishers well to mitigate my elephants and that along with some key rallies almost was the difference.

Round 3
sunnyboy (Byzantines 551-578 AD) beat schmolywar (Ptolemaic 166-56 BC) 48-14
A tough contest. Outnumbered in the skirmish fight, the Byzantines fell back from the rough terrain that dominated the middle of the field. The Ptolemaic army advanced in a tight formation protecting its flanks from the mobile Byzantine lancers. As the two lines clashed a couple of push backs by the Ptolemaic pike phalanxes resulted in exposed flanks that were exploited by the Byzantines to force open the enemy line. With the Byzantine horse occupying the enemy reserves, the victory was ground out.
Thanks for the game!

Round 3
ianiow (Byzantine) defeated klayeckles (Egyptian) 55 vs 28
Klay's Egyptians anchored their left on a patch of rough ground in which they stationed archers and extended their line to the right with a mix of spear and archers and a small reserve of cavalry. The Byzantines tried initially to get around the Egyptian right flank but Klay refused his right and headed his troops into the safety of a forest. On seeing this the Byz cavalry did a sharp 90 degree turn and crashed into the Egyptian center. This was followed by a second attack wave of decent Byz HF and a third wave of lesser HF. The Egyptian center proved extremely resilient to these three waves of attack but were outnumbered and eventually succumbed to the focused press of the enemy before their own flanks could get fully engaged. Narrow victory.
