Byzantine lists

I've started my first game with the Byzantines and I am somewhat taken aback by the content of the army list. Back in the glory days of 25mm, my best friend had a Nikephorian Byzantine army, which stood out because it had cataphracts that charged in wedge (looked good but - being cataphracts - despite being horribly expensive in points they rarely did anything useful), long spear/bow armed infantry (usually in separate ranks), and the Varangian Guard (which often did achieve something). I am no Byzantine scholar but am surprised to find that none of these troop types are in any of the Fog2 lists, can somebody educate me as to why?

Nikephorian era is still couple centuries beyond the game's current time-frame.
