Hard Crashes in Multiplayer

Post by vinraith »

I have tried three times to take a turn in my current 1.5.3 game and have, on each occasion, had the entire computer lock up (to the point of having to his "restart" on the case) - usually on turn submission but on one occasion just in the middle of moving troops. I was not having this problem on the previous patch. Any help getting this resolved would be greatly appreciated.

welcome to the forum and sorry for your issues,

http://www.slitherine.com/forum/viewtop ... 88&t=79801

hard crashes most of the time are hardware or software eg driver conflicts and not game related, so a log and report would be needed to understand why etc,

How to get a DirectX Diagnostic file:

1. click on "START"
2. click "run"
3. type in "dxdiag" and click "OK"
4. check through the tabs and perform all tests
5. click "Save all Information..." and save the text file to a location of your choice

We prefer that DxDiag files be posted as message attachments rather than pasted into the body of the post.

once the report has been made, just zip the file then attach it to your post as it's a Txt file which is then not permitted to attach to the forum, where as a zip file is.

Please also post the contents of the error.log from Documents/My Games/FieldOfGlory2 - either the error.log file immediately after a crash, or there should be datestamped error logs from the crash timings.

Cheers

Thanks for your assistance. I've attached a .zip containing the dxdiag output as well as the relevant error logs. Let me know what to do from here!

Single GPU, actually, but dual monitors of different sizes. I game on the 1080p. That's never been an issue before, with this game or any other.

I should take a look at that antique sound driver. (Edit: There legitimately doesn't seem to be a newer driver for it)

developer will need to comment on the game logs, as i have no idea on that part tbh

i only noted what i found, as the bottom error part of the DxDiag report was missing, not included etc

I appreciate you looking at it. I sent what dxdiag generated, is there something I need to do to generate the "error part" you mention? You said something about running tests, but I went through the tabs and didn't see anything to do with that. Each tab said "no problems found."

Is it possible that the machine is overheating? The update improves performance, which would result in higher framerates. If you are on a laptop that could explain the issues as the error logs are not showing a crash, just that the app or system dies completely.

SHIFT+Q should show you the framerate for the game.

Cheers

So, over the holidays I got this to stop happening by doing two things: disabling Malwarebytes and turning off my VPN. Oddly, if one or the other is active it's not a problem, but the combination causes this hard freeze-up. No idea why, as that didn't happen on earlier patches. It's easy enough to work around, though, knowing that.

Thank you for checking back in! :)

Edit: Further experimentation has shown that it's just Malwarebytes, regardless of anything else. It has to be disabled or there's a chance (it's intermittent) of this kind of lock-up.

It is a shame to have such a good game crash due to overheating.

Try some of the following:

Hoover your room and your computer! (This removes dust that can get into your computer fans. You can use compressed air blowers/blowing through a straw/qtips to remove clogged up junk from your fans in you CPU/GPU and power supply unit.)

Installed with Steam? Settings>In Game> Disable steam overlay (This I think increases performance speed of game, reduces/eliminates the Slow Mouse/mouse lag, and strains computer less)

Consider reducing FPS (Frames Per Second): In the following folder C:\Users\m\Documents\My Games\FieldOfGlory2 edit the file USER.TXT to include the following line:

Code: Select all

FPSLIMIT 50
This limits the FPS to 50, thereby capping the strain on the computer.

Also try reducing the resolution of the game inside the game settings.
Try stopping the animations in the game settings too, as well as shadows, anti-aliasing.

Then, once the overheating has been solved, try re-enabling these features one by one. Perhaps there are some other possibilities.
