Unit Indicators: Is there a legend somewhere?

Really having a tough time with this game's UI/interface, particularly the unit icons and trying to decipher what's what.

I'm playing World War II, as Germans. I have 2D map enabled. I see the red and black iron cross circle, bottom left, but sometimes it has half of the iron cross covered by a black "<". No idea what that means.

Also, I'm assuming the dark shade of the iron cross means the unit has no attack or movement points left?

The manual doesn't seem to mention any of this at all either.
