harveylh (Jewish Revolt 66-135AD) beat oscarius (Roman 105-25BC) 44-19
Fortunately the hill with some rough terrain was closer to the Jewish deployment zone or the game would have been a lot closer.

First Time Control check . . .
This will be on Monday evening on October 22nd. Rule 3 states,
"Players must register one result in each section they have entered within three weeks and three results within each section they have entered within five weeks (i.e. the halfway stage) of the opening of the tournament or they may be replaced by a player from the reserve list."
So we will be at the first check stage in 10 days time and the purpose of this first check is to identify any non-starters or players who may have taken on too many matches. This second category of players is likely to be much smaller now given that the maximum number of sections allowable has been reduced from five to four. I have already started the checking process. Firstly, I made a list of players who have not been involved in a completed match in each section. Then I went through that list and removed players who have posted challenges in the various "arrange your matches here" threads. That left me with a small list of players who had not completed a match or posted a challenge. Some of the players listed were reserves who had only just joined the tournament so they are exempt from the first Time Control. So I ended up with just four players to send a PM to, which, I did last night, and already three of those four players have replied indicating they have multiple matches underway. There are so many challenges flying around at the start of the season that it is quite possible to play a lot of matches without writing a word on the forum. So that just leaves one player to get in contact now (he has entered just one section) and one player (youngr) who will be starting his matches on October 18th due to a poor internet connection currently off the west coast of Africa (this was agreed to me by me before the tournament started). Everyone else appears to have made a prompt start, which is excellent.

A real nailbiting game, the Zealots were like supermen and shrugged off flank charges more often than not. Thanks for a great game Danny, look forward to our encounter in the "from Maurya to Alaric" section. Cheers Mark

Group 2
Nijis (Ostrogoths 493-561AD) defeats nyczar (Byzantines 493-550AD) 63-42.
The Greek horse archers masterfully wiped out a larger force of Germanic lancers on the wings and it looked like it would be yet another triumph for Byzantine combined arms. But a handful of stubborn and very lucky holdouts prevented them from coming to the aid of the beleaguered center, which was brought down by a single lancer careening through its rear areas.
