Order type description question

Post by tora_tora_tora »

Hi, everyone. I almost finish my translation!! Congratulation myself, well done.
And finally I can have time to modd, and test-play. Though there are still CoM prebattlebriefings(which is something like novel,
in fact, and that is really hard to translate, and that's why automatic translation never work) waiting, I guess I can give myself
some refreshing time to get the feeling of this game again.

Well, by the way, there are few things which I cannot guess or feel uncertain while translating some of part of the games.
And the biggest one is here.

When you point your mouse coursol on the order buttons during battle, tool-tip appear and tell what these order is.
here is the description of them.

Name : Advance ~No Wait ~Short Advance ~Fire Ranged Weapons ~Normal Speed ~Medium Reaction Range
Name : Charge ~No Wait ~Short Advance ~Fire Ranged Weapons~High Speed ~Medium Reaction Range
Name : Short Hold ~Short Wait ~Very Short Advance ~Fire Ranged Weapons ~Normal Speed ~Medium Reaction Range
Name : Long Hold ~Long Wait ~Very Short Advance ~Fire Ranged Weapons ~Normal Speed ~Medium Reaction Range
Name : Envelop ~Medium Advance ~Fire Ranged Weapons ~Normal Speed ~Low Reaction Range
Name : Outflank ~Long Advance ~Fire Ranged Weapons ~Normal Speed ~Low Reaction Range
Name : Seek Enemy ~No Wait ~No Advance ~Fire Ranged Weapons ~Normal Speed ~Maximum Reaction Range
Name : Hold Fire ~No Wait ~Short Advance ~Hold Fire ~Normal Speed ~Medium Reaction Range

The part I feel uncertain is Short Advance, Very Short Advance, Medium Advance, Long Advance, No advance, Short Advance.
Do you guess what this mean? If you have some ideas please teach me, please.

And second question is what kind of order do you use most often?
I often use Advance, Charge, Long Hold. But rarely use Hold Fire. And I must confess  I don't know how to use Envelop, and Outflank.
When I want to envelop enemy, I use Charge and setting waypoints for the units.

Hi Tora-Tora-Tora!!!

The 2 Envelop orders are for short and long envelopment of the enemy's flanks. Your troops just march stright ahead and will react as such: 1) with a short Envelop they have a medium reaction range, that is they will only react/attack enemy troops at or closer than medium range; 2) with the long Envelop or Outflank your troops march straight ahead and have a short reaction range to enemy troops. Sometimes, if your eneloping and outflanking troops do not come close enough to the enemy they just keep marching all the way to the rear of the screen.

Hold Fire, your troops just advance (or maybethey just stand) without firing; Seek Enemy your troops advance nd can fire at the enemy.

All the other commands are somewaht self-explanatory and I can't answer them all right now.

Short, very short, long etc refer to the distance the squad advances directly ahead before going into a seek mode.

PS congratulations on the translation!

Thank you magobarca.

The reason why I use charge with waypoints is , it is easy to get in unison with other frontal assault units.
As with envelop and outflank, units do not run, they walk, and so their marching speed is somewhat halved compared to charging units.
And there is another reason. In most cases, there are key terrains between enemy army and my army.
So in order to get there before eney occupy these terrain, I often use charge order with waypoints, and in some case with hold fires
(as Auxillia have one javelin and Velites have javelins), especially when I want to occupy rivers against enemy heavy infantries.

Thank you Iain.
Now I check once again around tutorial campaign's instrcutions and prebattle briefings. Everytime I check, there is always some points to fix.
And thank you for answering about orders descriptions.

Hi Tora-T-T,

I never used way points for LA, and maybe a few times only for some game that I forget. With LA I just give initial orders and then any other movement I do is by directly clicking on the unit and giving it direct orders.

Waypoints

Post by quintusvarus »

Waypoints are great for getting troops behind the enemy/ flank attacks, etc. But what drives me up the wall is the tendency if ordered to advance at ordinary pace for the unit(s) to then abandon the plotted path and rush straight at the nearest enemy, except in charge mode when they do as commanded but then I have to waste order points getting them to stop until I'm ready for them to attack again, which would have all worked out nicely at a slower pace!

Main reason that I don't use way points is that I didn't read the instructions and I am too lazy to do so. So, no way points for me.

However, I feel it is harder to win battles by not using way points and having to use your comand points, so that's what I do. :D

Maybe I should read the instuctions?? A brilliant

LOL, yeah. I would check it out. Waypoints are very, very useful in SP.

In MP, they can be invaluable in deceiving your enemy without wasting order points. For instance, you could use waypoints to have all your cavalry start toward the left, then after allowing enough time for the enemy to react, bring them back to the right. You could even pull what is called a Double Reverse in american football, and move them back to the left again. And you can do all this without issuing one single order. Meanwhile your enemy is clicking like crazy, running his order bar down, and wasting his potential to react later.

In fact, if you were feeling really whimsical, you could park your general on a hill, and have your troops "pass in review" before assuming their places in the battle line and charging ;)

I bought my copy of LA direct from Slitherine (yay, me!). In my manual, pages 31-33 are devoted to a description of what all the various orders mean.

At the bottom of page 33, waypoints are discussed.

Hope this helps.

Page 33, OK I may try it, but I like the challenge of the way I play the game, it's more primitive plus I get to watch some precarious situations unfold at times and if I lose I can just rename my commander 'Dumheadius' or 'Coola Brainius' (Butt Head) or something. :D I really don't need way points, but it would be fun trying them out.

I am from the USA, Detroit, MI and that is a good analogy about the Double reverse, although I don't follow ANY sports anymore. Both the owners and players make way too much $ and it seems a bit to mercenary and cutthroat for me. i do actually like sports though.

A Spatacus Mod, that could also be used for the 2 slave revolts in Sicily would be very neat, along with 2 or 3 Carthaginian Mods for the 3 Punic Wars, probably only need 2 mods for the units for Punic Wars 1 and 2, but different battles for all 3.

I got burned out with all games at the moment, and have to finish METW as I got the campaign to work quite nicely, but that will take me another year of on and off work.

I still like Legion Gold and Spartan and GoT and CoW, but would like to fiddle around with LG again. Just speed up the units strategic movement again and maybe add some chainmail Legionary skins from some old skin files I have saved, etc. Actually, some CoW light infantry javelineers etc. could be used for Etruscans etc. in LG. Fun and fairly accurate games with great startegic maps IMHO.

Once I learned how to mod LG, I had buildings such as apple orchards, different metal mines and some other wierd ones, but I yanked them as they weren't all that 'necessary'. Converted the Gladiators to Triarii, and id I remember you had to leave the name 'Gladiators' in the Squads Text file but could change the name in another file for Triarii to appear on your build screen etc. I have all those files and have to dig them up and put them in LG, but that will take some time and experimentation again.

Some fellow, lt586 or something, made some nice skins and did some other work with Legion modding, and he is the guy that made the SPQR mod for RTW, which I have to try yet. i like medieval TW more so than RTW, but the modders fixed a lot of things with RTW.
