Burgundian mixed archer/pike

Post by Switzer »

Hi

Whats the point in mixed pike/archer
units in the burgundian list
The pike are down as defensive spear
but that has no benefits when you have
only one rank
Have i missed something or is this a rather
stupid formation from the chas the rash

A single rank of steady spear means that opponents cannot get Lancer or Swordsmen PoA even if the spearmen don't get a spear PoA themselves.

Coupled with support shooting at Impact it is quite a useful formation against mounted - don't put it infront of Swiss pikes though ...

At the club on Monday night my one rank defensive spear one rank bow Skutatoi did a very serious number on several BGs of superior Lancers including one BG of Heavily armoured knights which they wiped out after two charges on the spears. OK, my dice were reasonable but as I broke two out of three BGs of lancers that were thrown at my 2 BGs of Skutatoi I think that is a good sign.

If they stay steady they are a real problem for mounted. The Burgundian Dspear/Longbow would be really rather potent against lancers I feel.

True, you actually managed to disrupt one BG when you killed my general in a losing melee.

I was really impressed by how good these troops are against lancers.

There seemed a lot harder looking from my side of the table........considering you only went disrupted cause you lost your general!
