Beserker Games as Campaign Engines

Post by w_michael »

Beserker Games http://www.berserkergames.net/index.html specializes in print & play, solitaire, war games covering a wide variety of eras. I just purchased A Crowning Mercy: A Solitaire Game of the English Civil Wars (1642-1651) and By Fire and Sword: A Solitaire Game of the Thirty Years War (1618-1648). The rules are solid, and I think that the battles can easily be resolved using Pike & Shot Campaigns, thus making the game a potential solitaire campaign engine. The game designer calls the games semi-historical, which is about right, but they will give you a feel for each war without being pedantic.

I was wondering, has anyone else has tried it?

I hope to try it this week. I had to buy more card stock to print the components, and I am in the scissors stage. The rules for the ECW game and the 30YW game are almost identical, as you might expect. Leaders are chosen randomly, but there are a lot of them, all with command and strategic factors, so they will not appear in their historical locations. Leaders can command from 4 to 24 points of troops, which I plan to convert to P&S points by multiplying by 50. The game is card driven, and an end-of-game card inserted into the shuffled deck is your deadline to be victorious. I'll post some pictures, and possibly a review, later. It would be interesting to resolve a battle both ways (original game vs. P&S) to see how the system works. If a battle would make a boring P&S game I will probably use the board game to resolve it.

EDIT: The game is almost ready to go, but I am going on summer vacation so the project will have to wait until I get back.
