Cannot Install 6.1.7 / Update to 6.1.9

Post by gw15 »

I must be missing something about this patch to 6.1.9

On the Matrix site I uploaded the huge patch. Upon extracting it and running it all it did was send me to the Slitherine web site.
On the Slitherine web site I downloaded the 6.1.9 file.
The file was named OoBWWII-MultiUpdateComp-v6.1.9.exe
I ran that but then two more files showed up on the WinZip:
OoBWWII-MultiSetupRelease-6.1.7.2 yes, that's right 6.1.7.2, not 6.1.9. Also note this file is a.pdf file.
OoBWWII-MultiSetupRelease-6.1.7.exe

I double clicked on the exe one and it starting executing. After a while a little window came up and instructed me to insert disc 2????

I ignored the message and open OOB and it now says version 6.1.9.
Should I be concerned?

What is the .pdf file?
Why ask for disc 2?

All's well that ends well! As long as it did end well . . . :?

I can't answer all of your questions. I can only tell you what I just did in order to check whether anything has changed. Here it is and you may want to follow these procedures again if your game appears to be not functioning properly.

I followed this link that Shards provided and found that it still works: https://www.slitherine.com/members/publicdl.asp?gid=516

It took me to this page and, even though I am always logged on, it made me log on again here in order to get at the installation file and patches:

Capture1108.jpg
Capture1108.jpg (574.3 KiB) Viewed 2276 times

That's fine, but after I logged in, I landed on this page:

Capture1105.jpg
Capture1105.jpg (572.33 KiB) Viewed 2283 times

I HAD TO GO BACK TO SHARDS' LINK AND FOLLOW IT AGAIN. This time, I got to the destination page that I wanted:

Capture1104.jpg
Capture1104.jpg (638 KiB) Viewed 2283 times

I downloaded the installation file at the bottom of the page. My zip file window looked like this:

Capture1106.jpg
Capture1106.jpg (138.63 KiB) Viewed 2283 times

BOTH FILES NEED TO BE EXTRACTED AND SAVED IN THE SAME PLACE (your desktop, etc.) DOUBLE-CLICK THE .EXE FILE ONLY. THE FILE THAT ENDS IN ".2" IS "PART 2" AND WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY ACCESSED WHEN NEEDED.

That gets you to version 6.1.7. I downloaded the patch file for 6.1.9. My zip file window looked like this:

Capture1107.jpg
Capture1107.jpg (119.58 KiB) Viewed 2283 times

AGAIN, THIS FILE NEEDS TO BE EXTRACTED AND SAVED SOMEPLACE. DOUBLE-CLICK IT TO PATCH UP TO 6.1.9.

Now, if you don't follow these instructions to the letter, you are not going to be successful. There is no PDF file involved but if you tried to run the installer from within the zip file, your computer may have thought the ".2" file is a pdf file, I don't know. You need to extract these files before running them and you should only be double-clicking the .exe files.

You can see on the first page of this thread that I complained about this process and laid it out for them as to why it's confusing, cumbersome, and bad for business. Shards said he would "ask internally to find out if we could be communicating the locations of these downloads better." Maybe some good will come from that but for now, this is how it is.

Thank you!
I did run the game for a turn and it seemed to run okay but I didn't extract the ".PDF" at all and canceled "disk 2" installation.
I may go back and follow exactly as you instruct to make sure.

I agree, this is the worse patch process I have ever come across. Well, WON was the worse before this one but I haven't played WON in a while so maybe they improved the patch process.
OOB is a fantastic game so I must put up with the patch process they have in place.

well, not working out so good.
I extracted the v6.1.7.exe as you instructed. (note: I am confused about your instruction on that as you say to extract both files but then state to only double click on the exe file. I only doubled clicked on the exe file)
This did get my game to 6.1.7
then I downloaded the 64bit 6.1.9 file and my zip folder looked just like your picture. I doubled clicked and guess what. It went right back to the OOB slitherine web site page where the 6.1.9 file is and you have to "order" it and download. I did that but I now receive an error message that the file is in error in my temp folder and will not let me get to 6.1.9 version. When I open the game it is now 6.1.7.
This is extremely frustrating.
I tried to find the temp file oobwwII-multiupdatecomp blah blah blah but cannot even find the folder where it is.

I'll keep trying on this. I guess I should have left it alone when I had 6.1.9 version showing up on the game splash picture.

continues to give me error message: Invalid archive file name.

I did find the temp file folder and I deleted all the temp files and went through the process again. Still gives me the Invalid archive file name when I try to extract 6.1.9 update.

Any ideas?

I started over. It still asks me to insert disc 2 on v6.1.7.
I am unable to extract the 6.1.7.2 file because my PC thinks it is a .pdf file.

If I try to extract 6.1.9 it send me back to the Slitherine web site to download 6.1.7 again. endless loop.

It's not just the whole complicated online-update-location-finding-process, I don't know why they're still putting up ZIP files. Most users nowadays don't even know they have to extract the file(s) prior to just double-clicking on everything. I'm not a fan of Steam particularly, but they have a working auto-update system that never had any problems with OoB-updates.

Sure, Steam installs updates without asking, but maybe that's the way to do things at the present day, to prevent posts like these.

This doesn't make sense to me, why .2 extension is associated the with pdf reader? Are you attempting to run "OoBWWII-MultiSetupRelease-v6.1.7.2"?

Anyway, are you sure that you aren't running the "OoBWWII-MultiSetupRelease-v6.1.7.exe" inside your unzipping program instead of full unzipping the file "OoBWWII-MultiSetupRelease-v6.1.7.zip" first to a folder in your Hard Disk Drive?
