Number of bases fighting in Impact Phase

Post by babyshark »

Okay, feeling a little stupid this morning; these may be silly questions.

1) Assume BG A is in close combat with BG 1, composed of Kn (and therefore fighting one rank deep). All bases of both BGs are in frontal contact with a base of the opposing BG. BG B conducts a legal rear charge on BG 1, getting two bases into contact. Per p.56 only one base from BG 1 turns to face. How many bases fight the impact combat?

2) Assume a friendly BG in a two-deep formation is charged by an enemy BG that is coming in at an angle from the side, but that cannot--for whatever reason--qualify as a flank charge. The enemy BG wheels such that a step forward contacts both the front and rear bases in the rightmost file of the friendly BG. How many bases fight the impact combat?

Thanks for your help,

Marc

1) One - I suppose we rationalise this by saying that the melee is already rather a mixed up scrum. The charge from the rear may demoralise the target further, but there isn't really a solid group to impact into.

2) Two - both sides have two bases in contact so fight with two bases. When the charger conforms there will be one base to the front and one as an overlap. They will continue to have two bases fighting.

IMHO

1. 2 bases from each fight at impact as two bases make contact. See below. (It will be different in melee, depending on who's left alive to turn)

2. If 2 bases from each are in contact at impact 2 bases from each fight. See above. (If one side has 1 base in contact with 2 enemy only one base from each side fights. )

I agree with Phil on this one.

At impact there are always the same number of bases fighting. Only one base turns if any other contacted bases are in contact in another direction but all contacted bases fight at impact. In melee only bases facing the relevant way fight any given BG.

I take your point. It is the number contacted, not the number facing at contact. Now you have pointed it out, it is rather obvious. I have applied this logic to question two.
