Two things

Post by sum1won »

Okay, I have two things here:

First: Ive been assigned a project on the "mystery of the 'lost legions'". Does anybody have any advice on where I can find good info on this?

Second: Does anybody know some very good all-around colleges that I should look into? The problem is that my interests are very diverse- right now Ive got it narrowed down to the sciences, marketing, psych, philosophy, and pre-law, with other things also jockeying for position. So, yeah, Im interested in enough that I dont want to go somewhere with a narrow focus.

Go here, http://tinyurl.com/ to convert this:

to this; http://tinyurl.com/hpk37

This site URL is a Google search for 'Roman Legion in China'. Much recent evidence and research is being done concerning some of Crassus' troops that were captured by the parthians.

Lost Legions

Post by honvedseg »

If you're referring to the two Legions commanded by Varrus which were destroyed in the Teutoberger forest, there's some unusual insight and speculation on the topic in the second volume ("The Barbarian Invasions") of Hans Delbruck's three volume set "The History of Warfare".

I just read there were 3 Legions destroyed in the Teutorberg Wald, or Hycernian Silva, not 2.

They were 17, 18 and 19, although there may have been another numbering system being used to give 9, 11 and 12, but I don't know.

No, the legions that are refered to as lost in this project are definitely 9, 11, and 12- Im not talking about the 17, 18, and 19, but 3 other legions which do not seem to have a record of destruction.

Oh look, here is where 9, 11 and 12 came from, and they are the years of some other campaigns against the Germans. Chris

After three campaigns (in 9, 10 and 11), Tiberius thought that the Germanic tribes had been punished sufficiently, and he celebrated a triumph in 12. He also decided not to try to occupy the country east of the Rhine anymore. This was not surprising: we already noticed above that he already taken a similar decision in 8 BCE. During his reign as emperor (14-37), Tiberius was to stick to this policy.

Okay. You are not getting it. The 9th, 11th and 12th legions were not lost in the teutoburg forest. They did not dissapear at the same time. According to the text I am reading, there are no records of how they were actually destroyed- just the areas. The ninth was destroyed in scotland, which is not in the teutonburg forest.

Funny, here:

http://www.livius.org/te-tg/teutoburg/teutoburg01.htm

seems to be stating the 17, 18 and 19th Legions were lost, and that those numbers were never again used to identify and enumerate Imperial legions.

Funny isin't it?? Seems there may be conflicting thought and evidence to this.

So, what was/is the point??

That legions were lost all over the place, especially during the 2nd Punic War?? This is not anything new!!!

The first reference was made to the Teutorborg Wald, and perhaps Parthia, so maybe someone else is not getting it.

Ave sum1won,

I don't think that the IX Hispana was lost or destroyed in Scotland.

There is a thread recently started on this very subject.

Have a look here:- http://www.romanarmy.com/rat/viewtopic.php?t=6961

That is a FICTIONAL book based on a misconception and apparent falsehood.

Nice list and info. and history of the IMPERIAL Legions and I have been to that site before, and many others. That is a very good site.

The point is that I am asking about those legions specifically, NOT the ones lost in the teutoburg

Well, all you had to do was clarify which Legions you were speaking of to begin with and that would have made it easier. There were a lot of lost Legions, particularily in the 2nd Punic War.

If a person doesn't make theirself clear to begin with then ambiguities and confusion may arise.

Due to the recent evidence arising from China concerning Crassus' lost Legions, and taking a guess, I had originally thought you were referring to this, while Honvedseg originally thought you were referring to the Legions lost in the Teutorborg Wald and then I also did since you did not say that it was neither Crassus' or the Teutorborg wald Legions you were speaking of until later, and even then it was still not exactly clear.

I never had a college Prof. etc. give such scant and nearly useless info. to research as you presented that info. in your original and latter posts.

Anyway, there is a lot of good info. out there concerning this, and those 3 specific Legions that you mentioned.

Have fun, Magobarca
