Surprise! Aufklärungsgeschwader 12 discovered a massive tank army North of Kuma River. Von Manstein is now suddenly very worried about his genius plan to cross Kuma River and then Terek River towards Grozny... and Paulus feels kind of reconfirmed in his opinion about Soviet reserves… but what to do now? Seizing the oil fields will be kriegsentscheidend… more than anything else!

Turn 30 – 31 August 1942
Weather: cloudy and dry

Overall situation:
The OKW is comfortable with the overall progress made to date while prestige and fuel remain very low. In the East, Leningrad is expected to fall within the next few weeks. Moscow and the center of the front line down to Kiev and the Crimea have been surprisingly stable. However, the Soviets might start another winter offensive and just very recently, von Manstein discovered significant enemy forces threatening Operation Edelweiss in the Caucasus. However, he will need to find a solution together with Paulus while Paulus still doesn’t want to attack Stalingrad on his own… So far Rommel is in control of North Africa. However, OKW expects that the British will try to recapture Tobruk as they still hold Egypt and all of the Middle East. Malta has been seized securing our Southern flank and a new but small army (group) has been formed at Tripoli, just in case the British might land along the coast of North-West Africa. Operation Sea Lion continuous to be delayed due to limited resources but must be kicked off soon. Key mid-term objectives continue to be (in this order): Leningrad, Caucasus and England.

Army Group South left defensive AT units behind the Dnieper River, just in case of any Russian winter offensive. Kiev has been garrisoned.

Army Group South occupied the Northern Caucasus, i.e. all offensive units are stationed South of Rostov and have been intentionally cut off from the former main front line / natural borders running from Kiev to the Crimea. The key objectives are Grozny and Baku while protecting the Northern flank. A preemptive strike might be required?

I look forward to follow your advancing troops in this battle. And reporting every single round is a hell of work. My last play had a nearly similar strategy than yours. Quick advance to Moscow, Leningrad. After that start Sealion. Afrika Korps attacking east and preparing the defense of Tunesia in the west. But I skipped completely the Caucasus. So I am interested how this difference will change the outcome of your battle. My feeling is that you are on the way to a DV between round 99 and 105 ;) Good success, Herr Generalfeldmarschall!

Western Europe:
Returning from the Ostfront, General von Rundstedt just arrived in time in Northern France to stop Operation Jubilee, a Canadian commando operation against the port of Dieppe. Von Rundstedt is wondering how the Canadians managed to sneak through the Channel. Latest rumors are they were trying to steel an Enigma code machine? Anyway, von Rundstedt believes Operation Sea Lion can’t be delayed any further and the bluff needs to end. He will talk to Grand Admiral Dönitz on what the Kriegsmarine can do to get serious about the whole exercise, especially in light of the British home fleet. The problem however is that Dönitz seems very excited about submarines only and a lot of resources are going into the subs… Anyway, OKW agrees with von Rundstedt and decided that he should lead the invasion forces.

South of Moscow, Guderian decided to take the front back to a line Bryansk-Kaluga-Moscow. After recent Soviet attacks on Orel he believes that this bulge will be hard to defend for the time being and that a straighter front line might be easier to manage in winter, especially as Soviets now seem to even attack head-on through rivers. Guderian reckons that Tula on the East banks of the Oka River will remain out of reach for a while but it should not be remembered as the city that had stopped him…

Rommel is conducting war games on how to best defend Tobruk against another imminent British offensive. Also, should he himself join the newly established army in Tripoli or stay in Tobruk?
