Thureophoroi Shield Patterns

Post by peteratjet »

Having adopted the big oval shield for thureophoroi, how did hellenistic troops decorate them? What have other people done?

Galllic shield patterns seem to be typically bilaterally symmetric, with the axis running down the central rib, but are also full of baroque curly motifs, not quite the Hellenistic thing.

I believe that the only description we have is of some Thracian mercenaries using white ones and the Sidon stele which show block colours as well.

There is one sculpted into some greek building materials now in the Pergamon museum that shows a simple geometric pattern, but of course, no color.
