Knights without lances (war without tears)

Post by LambertSimnel »

Why would anyone want to take lanceless knights? Is there a good reason to take melee troops that cost 17 or more points per base and lack any impact POA?

1 They don't need to test not to charge
2 Most of them can dismount as overcosted heavy foot
3 Err...
4 That's it

They do get a POA in some circumstances e.g. charging medium foot in the open. But yeah not really good value

Who gets lanceless knights? I would have thought they are particularly good value for money. The non impetuousness is a major plus in my mind.

If you have a BG of 4 drilled lanceless knights then you can angle for a flank charge, in which case not having a lance charge doesn't matter. They will still butcher Cavalry and Light Horse (even if they go disrupted at impact) so have a large amount of uses.

To repeat - which army gets these?

I suspect that there are some in the Burgundian list. The Welsh can have one BG if they don't have a French ally, there are probably more.

Some English ones in Storm of Arrows IIRC.

I have only played 2 games with them, but both times they routed within two turns :(
But I suppose they have their uses.

They are delivery systems for troops w/ swordsmen and better armour PoA who get 2 dice per base. Having a lance is cool, but it doesn't work on some enemies or in terrain that is not open anyway. I guess they'd have their uses.
