General Fighting with a BG in Overlap only

If a general fights in the front rank of a BG that is fighting as overlap only is that general free to move to another BG before the end of that battle and still leave the BG fighting as an overlap?

My immediate feeling is that the general cannot leave until the BG he is with is no longer in close combat. I will try to remember to check the rules but I am pretty sure that he is stuck.

Correct. Once committed they are there until the combat is resolved.

However a BG only in overlap can itself move away therby breaking the combat and freeing the general.
